Fire Away - 6/3/2002 10:21:53
I have a site that I setup about 4-5 years ago and I recently added a Flash file. I guess what I need to do is consider how to bring it into the new millenium. Any suggestions.

Here it is.

Since I can't load Flash apps, it looks a little strange to me - but all the links are there, I couls still "use" the site. All the scrolling text is really distracting and takes away from the site - IMHO.

John, I was reading am article on marquis (scrolling text) and interfaces. Users these days will ignore the marquis because they relate them to pop-up advertising. Actually they tend to ignore anything that moves on a page. (So much for Flash) Truthfully when I opened the page I too ignored what the marquis was saying, but forced myself to read it and what it was saying was important! That and the fact that the color of the scroller and the Flash animation seem to detract from the basic design and layout (which is good) of the page.

I agree with the above comments.

It strikes me that your audience are very likely to be looking for something practical and informative - they will, hopefully, want seals, and they will thus want to know about how you operate, what you can do for them and so on.

Once you get to the text on your page that is clearly defined. But when the page opens all of that is below the crease and all I see is the flash and the scrolling text (which I never "see" or read - Caywind is right there). I know you probably spent some time on the flash, and it's nice, it just takes away rather than adds to the message.

I would also be inclined to move the bookstore link. Actually I think I would take it out of the navigation altogether and just put a small image or something linking to it below the navigation.

The images of the seals could be made a little sharper. If you lose the scroll and the Flash you will have more leeway to use less compressed images. They might look good seperating the opening paragraphs of your page from the text below that.

The Flash file seemed a bit cartoon-ish... like something I don't want the boss to know I'm looking at! Didn't give me a very professional impression.

I suggest removing the hit counter. They're more for personal sites rather than commercial. For a commercial site, you should really be using a log analysis app like Webtrends (entirely behind the scenes).

Ditto for the scrolling text. Yuck.

I'd suggest using Intial Caps for the menu options on your home page (rather than ALL CAPS). Easier to read and generally "friendlier."

I don't get the significance of the magnifying glass in your logo. Is that really a part of your logo? If not, I'd suggest removing it. The first thing I think of when I see that is search (not seals).

The bookstore introduces a different background color. Personally I would keep the same background (no color, no background in the table). As it is now, it doesn't add anything and is somewhat distracting.

You're using several fonts for the body text, sometimes Verdana, other times Century Gothic (an unorthodox choice). Personally, I'd stick with Verdana. It's designed for maximum readability on the web.

Use tables to align your form fields (on InfoCentral.htm). You don't have any form validation. Some fields should be required (currently none are).

Create a custom form confirmation page that matches the rest of your site. Seeing the default form confirmation that FrontPage profides is a pet-peeve of mine. Usually I don't display anything more than a simple "thank you" message that lets the user know that their information was successfully received, then link to the next page you want them to go to (most likely the do NOT want to "return to the form").

Now... time to go find some more pencil lead....
