FTP Problem - 6/4/2002 16:09:13
I am having a problem with FTPing to one server. It is a linux server running apache and I am using WS_FTP. I regularly FTP to several servers and this problem only occurs with this particular one. Basically after I have transferred a few file, the transfer just stalls. It could be after one or two files, or after 6 or 7. Either way everything just freezes. When I click 'Cancel' I get the following message: Accept Error: Descriptor is not a socket. I cannot close the connection by clicking close, nothing happens. ALl I can do is shut down WS_FTP and start again. I contacted the server admins and got this reply: quote: I have thouroughly tested the ftp daemon on the server and it is performing properly. The error message in the logs indicates that there is, in fact, a problem on your end. The error message is, "Data transfer stall timeout: 3600 seconds", which means that the server timed itsself out while waiting for data from your ftp session.
Fair enough but why only this server? I can FTP to my hearts content to any other. Any ideas? Katherine ++++++++++++++++++++++++ www.inkkdesign.com Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Katherine, It's either: 1. The gateway between you and that server has a bad router or switch - not likely. 2. That server is behind a bad (slow) router/switch/connection. Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our Specialty Find a Web Professional

I also have an FTP problem with one server. Here's the deal. My FTP client which I love will connect to any and all other servers on the planet, Except for my own ISP! It locates the server, handshakes, authenticates, and then it just sits there until it times out. Tried every setting possible with no change. Kinda of a bummer since I have about umpteen sites on that server (the free ones that come with the broadband service). For that server I have to use some cheesy free client (SmartFTP) which works great. Anyway I don't really have an answer, maybe if somebody else does, it'll help me too. #1. nope, all new network #2. I always wondered about this. Could it be that the FTp server is some old 486 limping along in a back room somewhere? Maybe with a 10mbps network card and a huge 5400rpm hard drive that takes forever to find anything? Maybe you have more insight, just what percentage of clients actually use the FTP service? Try doing something from the command prompt and if that works it could be a NT / unix setting ( i think they have different authentication protocals) also have you got a firewall set up to stop incomming traffic. I use an FTP server who trys to connect back to me, hence firewall kicks in and wants to know why? Stuart Steele stuart@stuweb.co.uk http://www.stuweb.co.uk
