Web Hosting Suggestions, please read! - 6/5/2002 14:52:04
Hi, I work for a small business that manufactures custom power supplies, and I've been their part-time webmaster at http://www.apxonline.com

We have been using a local web host that also provided us with dial-up access a few years ago, because it was convenient for us. Since that time, they have moved, and our motivation for staying with them has diminished. My boss is interested in finding a new host for our website, and I have come here to inquire upon such.

Basically we're interested in a host that tailors well to small businesses, offers virtual web hosting, and features that would be considered necessary to maintain the functionality of the site in its present and future state. I use FP2002 to edit the site, so obviously it would have to be FP-ready.

If anyone is familiar with a good host that can offer these things at a competitive price, please point me in the right direction.

In lieu of that, I'd also be interested in just knowing from a business point of view, exactly what I'm interested in, and what I'm not. Unfortunately, I've been out of the loop for awhile, so I'm not savvy with web hosting at all, which is why I'm here. :> I don't have a week to get acquainted with this perspective of web authoring.

As a side note, I've bought the Spooky Login, and am in the process of implementing it, so I would need ASP, and I do use forms for sales inquiries, but I'm not sure if I had used scripts. In the future, I'm planning on integrating some information to and from a access database, and I also want to be able to set up a web-based method of allowing others in the office to update our reps page (adding, deleting, or modifying a rep page) without knowledge of html, because they're all pretty computer inept, and can't let them go near even FP. :P For me, this is a big undertaking, so if anyone has any advice or can show me an example of how to do this, that would also be great!

Thanks much. :)

Chad -

I use http://www.parcom.net almost exclusively. That is, they host my sites, and I always recommend them first to people I design for.

So far everyone I know that has used them has been very satisfied.

They support all of the requirements that you listed, and then some. (they don't offer dial-up services... unless they've added that recently - they have a very handy list of features and prices on their site)

There are a lot of hosts out there, so take all of the suggestions you get here, and do a search online. You'll get tens-of-thousands of results when you search for web hosts!

Take a little while to look over several and decide if their price / services / track record is what you're looking for.

Good Luck!

I use SoftCom (softcomca.com)...they are very cheap and I have never really had a problem with them...for 50mg it is 9.95 per month...the downside is they only offer tech support through email. So take that into consideration. Rita

I have a site on Softcom (now MyHosting.com) as well and am thinking of moving it due to the frequent email outages. I've put up with for a while since it's so cheap and I only house a "hobby" site there, but for a business site I would have left long ago.

Having said that...Datapipe rocks! I have a reseller account with them and they've never failed me in the slightest. FP server extensions, ASP friendly, quick and easy setup/transfer, 24/7 phone support where a real live person answers in a couple of rings. Very hard to beat, and for even a very small business their hosting rates are affordable. Check 'em out at www.datapipe.com

I use www.seem.co.uk - hosting on win 2000 serviers starts at 30 pounds per year and includes 50meg, cgi-bin, asp support, dsn database, 10 pop3 email accounts, 1 gig of bandwidth.

It terms of what to look for ... I took a look at your site and although there is noting too techie on the site right now, you are obviously looking for future expansion. With this in mind you'll want to look at more dynamic scripting like ASP/PHP to deliver up to the minute data.

I use about 5 different hosting companies. There is one that I think is really terrific. Check it out at http://www.powweb.com/ You get 200MB Storage, FP extensions. Every feature you could want, a very helpful support forum and one forum for any frontpage related issues, good support for........ $ 7.77 per month with cheap domain registrations too. I just can't find anyplace that comes close to offering so much for so little.

Valaire,

Isn't it amazing how competitive the industry is becoming! Not long ago, $19.95 per month was the standard.

It took a long time between finding a hosting company for a client at $8.95 and actually getting my own two sites moved. The catalyst was really server down time that prompted my move.

The hosting company that now hosts three clients and my own two sites is: http://www.minnesotashopper.com

Service, ease of managing the accounts and reliability is outstanding!

This is my revision: This hosting company is an Apache/Unix server, which cannot handle Access databases.

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!

I use Infoquest which you can visit at www.infoquest.com Their support is excellent. I have 12 sites with them and I have only known my sites to be down once. The cause then was a huricane hit and they were down 2 hours. They assured all customers they now have a backup plan for that if it should occur in the future. Their email & phone support is first class.

I' ve had good results with www.readyhosting.com
They only have one hosting plan-- $99/year, but that includes 500MB of space and unlimited transfer, a 99.9% uptime guarantee, 24/7 tech support via email and telephone, and pretty much all feautures you could want.

Just moved over to readyhosting and saved myself 150.00 for the year. Will save an additional 50.00 for each site I move there as their time expires at my current host Interand.

They do not have 24 hour call in tech support but have toll free support during business hours.

Last post was a while back... what is everyone recommending for a small webhost now? Looking for a host for a small site, FP extensions, POP3 email... nothing extravagant :)

I' ve used ReadyHosting.com for several years now without a hitch.

They will ding you $25 (each) if you want SQL database and another $25 (each) if you want subdomains (say you have yourdomain.com then hisdomain.yourdomain.com and herdomain.yourdomain.com would be subdomains), but the basic $99 package gives a lot of bang for the buck. Also, they won' t set up a wildcard subdomain (but then I haven' t found anyone else that will either).

I' ve found they really don' t handle DSN-less database connections really well. But their online tool lets you set up your own DSN' s in seconds and then the connections work flawlessly. (But it could just be my coding. The Spooky Login, in DSN-less mode, works fine.)

I don' t think their online tech support is very helpful. They have been slow to respond and not very accurate. I think the tech' s are in too big of a hurry. They respond by asking me something that I told them in my original request. However, when I have called during business hours then their phone support has been excellent. Problems or questions are ususally resolved in minutes. Actually, I haven' t used their tech support in a long long time. Once I figured out their quirks, I have not had any issues.

Their webmail and POP3 controls are easy and give good controls, if you want to specify disk space allocations. They support CDONTS, if you want to allow form mail, such as for a Contact Me page.

They support the simple asp upload component.

I really like that they don' t measure bandwith. That is a plus, if you will be offering downloads. You won' t find yourself getting socked with a big bill because your site became popular.

The only real issue I have with them is that they don' t have any function for allowing me to set different passwords for different directories &/or sub-webs within my domain. One username and password gets you access to the whole site. Since I like to let others play with things I' m working on, this means I have to trust them 100%.

I don' t have any problem with recommending friends to ReadyHosting. In fact, I just did so today.

Regards,
Andrew

I' ve used a couple of hosts over the past year.

I generally use ipowerweb.com the most. I have had excellent service from them :). No issues with downtime or tech support. They also have some good add on marketing features to help you submit your site to search engines, training materials, good control panel.

I also use xeran.com for one of my larger sites. They are ok, but the control panel sucks. Tech support is sometimes good, othertimes I feel like I am talking to a newbie. This one was not my choice and I would move this site if I could.

I use webhost4life.com for a site that required ASP pages and a SQL Server 2000 database. Pretty cheap for a Windows Server hosted site. And so far no problems, but have only been with them for a couple of months.

The first host I used was Microsoft' s bCentral. Wow was I dumb! WAY Exensive and I told them that when I dumped them. There should be a warning somewhere that they are soooo overpriced. Plus their control panel sucked.
