Would you all critique my first site please? I am aware of the missing gif's on one page. Also, all of my links are underlined which was not my intention. Thanks for your help!

rwren:

While you have lots and lots of wonderful content, I feel you could use a little help with consistency in your layout and design. Below is a link to one of the great tutorials available on the OutFront web site. There are many more.

http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/design/layout.htm

Another area that needs correction is your use of fonts. Your choice of font will not show up on anyone who is perusing your site if they don't have that font installed on their machine. Plus it's a little hard to read, at least on my machine.

Some pages loaded very slowly due to the large sizes of your graphic elements. I also didn't care for jump around navigation -- your page keeps jumping all over.

I hope this helps you. This is just my humble opinion.

Hi rwren,
Looked at your site with IE 6.0, resolution at 800 X 600, and connection speed at 28.8 on 56K.

(1) General comments:
(a) Have you considered a navigation bar on each page instead of the "Back to the theater" link? It would keep your visitor moving along the site, as opposed to having to jump back to the main page each time for the next link.

(b) I agree with Terry as to the size of the graphics. On your main page: http://www.harmonybchurch.org/MAINMenu.htm The "Harmony" gif is 36 KB. Of a larger problem is your "ImpactLogo" gif on http://www.harmonybchurch.org/ImpactYouth.htm which was 662.3 KB. It took four minutes 55 seconds to load at my 28.8 connection speed.

(c) The mouse-over effect caused the pages to keep jumping. It was especially pronounced on your Main page with the horizontal navigation bar.

Specific comments:
(a) http://www.harmonybchurch.org/MAINMenu.htm large horizontal scroll bar

(b) http://www.harmonybchurch.org/AboutUs.htm small horizontal scroll bar

(c) http://www.harmonybchurch.org/what_we_believe.htm have you considered disconnecting the link until there is content on the page. It saves the user a wasted click.

(d) I loved this page : http://www.harmonybchurch.org/jesus_ministry_book/default.html - taking time out from checking the site to color the pictures. Great job

Hope this helps - and thanks again for the coloring book

rwren,

The problem that was mentioned earlier that hte page jumps on mouse over on the navigation, is apparantly caused by the different font size on mouse over. The same size font will solve this problem. Naturally the text below must move with differnt sizes.

When the home page is viewed in Opera 6.0, the expansion of text on mouse over, is restricted to the target link. On mouse over, the link "Our Staff" expands to "Our S"

The links work best in NN 6.0. The entire line expands to accomodate the larger font. The vertical variation still exists to cause the rest of the page to "jump." In NN 6, some of the links return "Page not found." OK in other browsers.

There is a lot of disturbing space on the home page between the last line of text and the bottom of the page.

If you or members of the church has written the text, you should place a copyright statement at the bottom of the pages. Specifically,

rwren,
I liked the site but I do agree with all the suggestions from Chuck, tterric, and John.

Like John, I had to stop and color the pictures. Wondering where you got the coloring program. That would be perfect for my CCD page!

I liked the alt text comments on the pictures but noticed you didn't have it on the ski trip pictures. Would also like to see the pictures (as opposed to graphics) just slightly larger.

I would suggest a way to skip the introduction. Some folks won't be able to get in.

I liked the entry a whole lot but when I return to a site I usually skip the intro rather then sit through it each time.

Great effort!

Good first site. The first page is a little sparse though and I agree with the comment about getting some consistency for all the pages. Keep looking and learning!

Look after #1 and donīt step in #2.

Thanks for all your input. I have taken many suggestions to heart such as the font change, and the mouse over effect. I totally agree in the navigation theory, I was having people always go back to the home page. I set it up the way I surf not thinking how others might navigate. I havn't made the change yet because I want to learn how to do drop down menus from the top for navigation. If someone can shed light on that, I would much appreciate it.
PS I'm glad everyone liked the coloring book. I am wanting to add many other interactive pages to the childrens area later. Thanks again, Rob
