Manual Search Engine Optimization - time involved - 6/9/2002 13:42:18

In the article posted at Outfront "Introduction to Search Engines - Part II" the writer suggests registering webs at 5-7 major search engines. I need to do this for a site (for a paying customer) but I have no idea how long I can expect this to take.

The sites are fairly simple: services offered, no sales or products. In other words, only the home page needs keywords, description, etc.(I think).

Any hints and suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Gail

Gail,

It probably takes 10 to 20 minutes per search engine, depending on you (typing speed), your access speed, and the indivitual site.

However, visit the search engine site and locate the link that may read: "Submit your URL"

You will quickly become aware of the kind of information they require. It speeds things up if your have FrontPage open to your site to "cut and paste" the desired info.

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!

if you register with dmoz it will cover some major engines, and if you go to worldsubmitter.com (be warned, create an email address at hotmail/or/yahoo and used that email address in the submission)
Thats all i go to get into the ranks. Of course it helps if the company has a unique name. anyway the above should take you about 30 - 40 minutes and should fully kick in on the net in about 6 months. I used the above method also for a one man company and i also used his name in the submissions... he was extremly happy cause if you were to type his name in a search box (of a major engine) his site ranks #1. I figured its an interesting way to quickly tell people how to find you instead of making sure they have a pen and reading the URL back to make sure its correct. No promotion intended, but his name is Leor Drory and the company is E.S.I.

I done the above numerous times, and its word of mouth has created those times.

I don't always use it but I find the semi automated approach of http://www.selfpromotion.com/ very good. There is a lot of reading there but it really is full of useful information and worth taking a bit of time to go through, the first time you use it anyway.

I would really avoid the totally automated ones - really, who in their right mind wants to submit to 63525 search engines? Most will just be email harvesters or free for all links pages which may actually damage your rankings in the worthwhile engines. There are only about a half dozen search engines and fewer general directories that matter and after that your time would be best spent getting links from directories and sites that are relevant to the site content - ie from where they will get good qualified traffic.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean by the above statement. Getting what links from which directories? Are you talking about categorizing within a search engine?

Thanks, gail

No, I am talking about small specialised directories.

For example if you were making a site for a washing machine repair man there might be sites that list such services for your local area - you should try to get them listed there.

Or if the site was for a photographer you would maybe look for a link from a bridal store in the area and offer to provide one in return.

That sort of thing.

How do you find these? Is there a directory of directories? Yes, a site I'm working on is very specialized, for a writer who is targeting a very specific niche.

Try searching for the search terms she would like to be found under in Google. You may find some places immediately that way. She may know of some herself.

If you find sites that do well in Google and are on a similar topic you can find out what other sites are link to it - by entering 'link:www.othersitename.com' in the Google search box. You may find links from directories and other sites that might also link to your client in those results.

You might also ask your client who, if any, her competitors are, (or people she considers to be in a similar field). From there you can see who links to them. Regards, Scotty
