First site guided by design parameters - 6/11/2002 17:09:42
Thanks to everyone in Beginners Forum for help when I barely knew what to ask. So here's my very first website.

Keep in mind this site was designed to meet several needs:
• Low-tech accessibility - many of the organizations and people we serve are limited to older, lower-memory computers
• Content oriented - offer more steak, hold back on the sizzle--especially if it uses bandwidth!
• Quick navigation - try to keep everything up front, un-layered, and one click away.
• Reassuring navigation - make sure users can always tell exactly where they are.
• Representation - coherently represent an organization whose tasks are diverse, whose mission is broad, and serves users with widely varying needs. (i.e., this website will be wide, not deep)

The homepage is: http://leavellcenter.com/default.htm

Used IE 5.5 to visit your site. Looks to me like you have met the requirements that you stated. Good Job

Ted,

An attractive well-organized site. All layout and links were the same whether viewed in IE 6, NN 6.2 or Opera 6.

To fulfil your state objective of quick navigation, all pages should have some appropriate links at the bottom of the page. Some that come to mind are:
  • Home
  • Back
  • Top (link to #top bookmark)

The best use of flash that I have seen. All others were used to dazzle and generally held up entry to the site. Yours was a very practical use in showing the difference in the two demographic studies.

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!

Since your dealing with some older browser you should set you background color. It is that default gray now.

Good job.

That's gray in NN - if you "do" decide to set a bgcolor, make sure you also set the txt color

Thank you all! I changed the BGcolor to white. Is it okay now in NN?

Gil, why do I need to set the text color when I set the BGcolor? If someone has reason to read text in some color other than black, shouldn't I yield to their reasons?

If you set BGCOLOR and not text color they "may" have their browser set for blck background and white text - now you have white text on a white background.
