Scanning photos - 6/13/2002 15:30:01
Hi,

Any tips about the most time-efficient way to go about scanning 100 photos, all of which must be then incorporated into a website? I have a good but fairly basic flatbed scanner, which doesn't have a feeder.

Anyone ever batch scan on a flatbed?

Thanks, gail

Bobby, if you could hear me now, I'm howling. I needed a good laugh and this did the trick. I actually thought of the same thing after I made the post and have been calling around.

Subcontracting it will be!

That one made me literally laugh out loud too, Bobby.

Gail, how much is Kinko's charging for scanning these days? (I guess I could quit being lazy and just call 'em myself).

No Kinko's close by. Here's the price I got from American Speedy: $15, each but will charge $10 for quantity.

Another printer: $8 a piece, batch: $60/hr.

A shop that does camera-ready work for printers - $5/per scan.

What do ya'll charge?

Always happy to entertain!

And let me say "Zoinks!" to those prices...
I've never priced anything like this, but $5 to $15 PER SCAN?

I'm in the wrong business... I think for 100 photos you could just about justify buying a new scanner that will feed, sort, scan, burn to CD, make your coffee, and manacure your nails...

Jeez. It only takes a few seconds to scan a photo! And they're only paying the kid behind the counter $7 per hour to stand there and punch buttons!

Keeee-ripes!

And those are Florida prices...betcha it costs a lot more in Seattle where my client lives.

I hear from my sister in Bothell that the weather is pretty nice in that neck of the woods today. I've been there about four times in the past five months and I always get rain, cold, rain, cold, rain, rain, rain. Oh, did I mention, rain?

Seriously, those prices don't even reflect the resizing and optimizing I'd have to do. Had an honest talk with my client and she's going to scan them herself and ship to me on a CD. Whew!

Bobby, wasn't it you who mentioned Parcom elsewhere? I'm using them for one of my accounts but their email support is really so slow. Next time you're in Renton, see what you can do.

Weather was great here last week, go over 90 for a couple of days. We're back to overcast with rain on the horizon.

But at least we have the worst traffic in the country!

I use Parcom a lot... I've never had any problems getting a response from them... are you using the form on their website?

Try emailing to support@parcom.net

To be honest, I've only dealt with their customer sevice team twice. Once on a biling issue that was resolved even before I contacted them (their response still came back the next day).

The second time was with a FP extensions issue (FP 2K to FP 2002). I was emailing back and forth with their CS manager for several days, sometimes until 10 o'clock or later... I'm surprised that you're having difficulty.

Take it to them! Send an email and tell them that you chose them because of a recommendation based on their customer service and you aren't getting the kind of service you expected!

They would probably appreciate the feed-back (if done in a professional manner)

I've been in CS for most of my life, and I've discovered that problems can get out of control quickly because nobody tells you that there is a problem.

What kind of trouble are you having with them? Maybe I can help?

Well, I hate to say it, but those prices seem about right. We get $7.00 per scan for photos (We do offer somewhat lower prices for regular customers who do quite a bit of scanning). The issue is that when you talk to these places (or us for that matter), you are getting prices for print work. Our scanner is a very expensive scanner designed to be used for doing full color catalog work. The requirements for this type of scanner are quite a bit different than for doing a web site. Face it, color on the web is pretty interesting and no one is going to be upset if the color is slightly off since it is the web. But, take someone's product, do a $10,000 print job and have the product be a slightly different shade of green and the customer will not be pleased.
When you go to most of these places to have them done, they are using higher end equipment. Frankly, it takes a heck of a lot of scans to pay for this equipment and Return on investment is the key. If the equipment cannot pay for itself, you shouldn't have it. So, they are making sure they pay for the equipment. (Of course, they do want to make a slight profit...)
In addition, most of these places have people who know how to use the equipment. (Notice I said most...). It doesn't matter how good the equipment is, if the person doesn't know how to use it, you'll still end up with an awful scan. (Actually I've been known to produce some awful scans ;0) but hopefully not too often.
SO, all that to say that I think the pricing is reasonable for the work. Unfortunately, reasonable is not always cost effective for people.

Whew!

I was gonna be upset if they were slacking on the CS front. I don't like making bum recommendations... and I'd hate to have to start searching for another host!

_gail,

Our Computer Club has a Nikon CoolScan. The best I have seen with is is about 24 images an hour.

If you have 2-1/4 medium format or 4X5 it will take considerably longer. For these we use an Epson scanner, and again it takes some time.

I charge $10 each, when done in conjunction to other web site work. But that includes some cropping and other minimal image manipulation in PhotoShop. It works out to be about the same as my standard $45 per hour fee.

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!
