This is a pretty cool intro site using actionscript. http://www.whoswe.com/splashguns.html

Cool maybe, but unfortunately potential customers can´t wait for this sort of intro to load and will take their custom elsewhere!
It would be great on a teenagers personal site but has no place on a commercial site.
Btw, I didn´t wait around to see what the site actually offered!

Look after #1 and don´t step in #2.

I think we have to give the average consumer a little more credit. This site has to do with design and their website design would give me a great deal of confidence in their ability to produce a quality product. This seems to be a company that does Flash well, not just Flash for the sake of Flash.

I know there are a lot of folks who frequent this forum who do not care for Flash. I wonder what the opinion of the general population (non-web designer types) is. As for me, I am always impressed with well-done, appropriate Flash. Anyone else?

I don't know about the average user, or how this research was compiled but I did read somewhere (I made a note of the link but cannot find it now, will track it down) that on sites which offered a choice of Flash or HTML versions over 65% of those WITH FLASH ENABLED browsers chose the HTML version.

Granted that is not about intros but it says a lot.

In most circumstances I would agree that Flash takes too long to load and does not contribute to the visitor experience. But in this case, it is the site of a web designer, and what they do on their site is a good indicator of what they can and will do for your potential site. So, it IS relevent.

Also, this site is done with Actionscript (which I am learning) and Actionscript does not render in the same way an .SWF file does. It's quicker, and more akin to Javascript than Flash's SWF files.

Go here for an example of a good Actionscript site: http://www.jackguy.com/

If I don't see something meaningful in five seconds, I'm outa there.
Both sites mentioned above took over 90 seconds for anything meaningful to appear. Imagine if every site used Flash or Actionscript.

I must say the graphics/audio are very cool. BUT, if I have time to go to the kitchen, mix a drink and throw the baked potatoes in the oven before it gets done loading (on a cable line), I'm not staying long. When the day comes that this stuff is fast then I'll start using it.

ah reckon, tharfo'e ah's, ah reckon.

Yes, it is definitely Cool! (almost as cool as a Duke Blue Devil dig at tarheel). I understand that it's for a web designers site too, but there should be an option to see it rather than being led to it.

I think you're missing the point. The entire site is a Flash-based site written in Actionscript. There IS no choice to see or not to see the Flash elements. Once the Flash files get loaded, Actionscript then executes the various flash elements according to the navigation wishes of the site visitor. Once the site loads (meaning all the Flash elements have been downloaded to the local machine) the site executes very quickly with no delay. And WOW! It's just the coolest thing in the world! Especially for photography sites. I'm in the process of building my photo page for my YosemiteFun.com site witrh Actionscript and it's gonna ROCK!!

Yes, you are correct that it takes a while to load, but not really that long, and once loaded it IS worth the wait.

How do you define "meaningful"? If you only wait 5 seconds, you don't see much on the web do you? I have DSL and even with that there are network bottlenecks, slow/overworked servers, etc. that delay every website once in a while. The market share for broadband is growing at even a faster rate than when 56k modems came out. In 2 years load times will not be a consideration when designing websites.

While we're at it, has anyone noticed that users with 1024 resolution now outpace 800 screen resolution for the fist time this month? 1024 is at 48% and 800 is at 45% of total users.

The web is a changing place, folks... roll with the changes.

I didn't realize it was a completey Flash made site. I take back my comment about being led to it then.

Even though DSL and Cable connections are quite popular and growing each day, there are still ones out there with basic dial up connections. I would assume those folks wouldn't stay around and wait for the Flash.

This company knows that, and still made a flash site. That is their perogative. They are obviously talented and I like what ActionScript can do, but most folks won't wait around for the download.

It's easy to get caught up viewing a site within the eyes of being a designer. One should view it in the eyes of a potential customer. Even though this site promotes design which I understand showing all of its talents with flash, I still believe they are not targeting most of their audience.

"Content" that has something to do with why I arrived there in the first place?

I "see" all I "need" in less than 10 seconds for sure

Hmm, interesting, I'm still at 61% = 800 & 29 = 1024

Gil-bo! How nice of you to take the time to interpret what other people were saying! You're a great guy...

Just out of curiousity, why are you ROTFLMAO to my comment about broadband market penetration?

Thanks again, big guy...

For all of you!

As of the last Comdex, none of the Microsoft folks in the Seattle area had broadband service in their homes?

As far as the site under discussion, download time wasn't a problem. Some of you stated that the creators of this site highly talented. In my opinion, the site was very entertaining. After I found the power button, that is.

When all was done, I started to go away asking myself: "What's Who's We? Why?" Thinking that I might have missed something, I went back to the site and clicked on the "business" side rather than my initial choice of "pleasure."

I came upon a different site. One with lots of the all important "Content." It was well organized and informative.

Graphics is great! Content is greater!

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!
