Vince from Spain -> Host Headers (6/18/2002 15:27:13)

Hi All,
I've got a Win2K Server with a few dozen domains all with a unique IP. Now I've got a couple of more domains to add I'd like to save a few IP's, so I believe I can do that using host headers. I have no place to test really, so can I run it past you guys and see if I am on the right track?
It seems to me that if I give two webs the same IP in IIS, in the IIS -> properties -> advanced, set the host header as say www.domain1.com and for the second www.domain2.com, and set them both up in the DNS to the same IP. Does that sound about right anyone?

All the best

Vince

You got it!

Best to also set up domain1.com and domain2.com without the www fluff.

BTW, I've seen 100 domians on one IP (Win NT4, IIS4) and it ran smooth.

Thanks for that Gil.

As an aside, does anyone know what to do about FTP? I was assuming that I could use the login account and have a different profile -> home path to use the same IP serve different directories, but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

Ok, I think I got the answer here about using Virtual Directories. I'll give it a go in the morning.

Vince,

Great link. It will save us some IP's.

Hi Erin,
Sure, with our dedicated server it costs us $3.00 per month per IP. I mean I don't want to sound stingy or anything but these things mount up. Now I'm just off to get the kids some dry bread and water for lunch.
