I thought shared borders were supposed to make life easier, make one change and lo and behold, all the pages in your site have the change. But, I have a couple of sites with quite a few pages, and shared borders with the contact info. When something in the border had to be changed, one change and it's set right? Wrong. I had to re-upload all the pages that used that border, not just the border.

I'm using FP 98 on one site, and FP 2000 Lite on another at work (it came with Office 2000); and the book says shared borders don't require FP extensions, but it so happens that extensions are installed in both cases.

What's the point of borders if I have to upload all the pages anyway? Sure, it does save having to open FP and edit the pages as well.

Any idea if I'm doing something wrong?

yeah B, shared borders can be clunky at times. Another technique for updating an item that is duplicated over many pages is to place that item in an "include" component. It automatically updates all pages that contain it. Just a little trickier to maintain since you don't get a wizard for the "included" file.

Thanks, Caywind. I thought both shared borders and include pages where variations on the similar theme of Server Side Includes, which I understand about. Are they? And what are the differences?

Actually I'm not quite sure why this happened. One clunky thing is that you only get four shared borders, top,left,right, and bottom. That means that you can't have nav "levels". If you change one border it changes all of the shared borders. Nav for different levels can be different so this kinda stinks. With includes I can set up a level1 nav section and then a level2 nav for sections deeper in the site. Also with includes I can use more than 1 include just for a bottom "component" for example a text menu and then a contact or copyright section below that. And the formatting of an include seems to be more flexible....

How would you go about setting up sub levels on an include page?

I would have a seperate included page for each level of navigation. Navigation needs to be well thought out because it gets to be tricky to change....
