How do I access the internet server in the second instance of Front Page?

Related question: Someplace in my reading it stated I could edit pages directly on the internet server rather than changing them on my hard drive version and then publishing the changed page to the web. This results in the same problem.

How do I access those files on the web server when all options I can find restricts me to my PC?

1. Open FP
2. Click File>Open Web
3. In the folders box type in the FULL url to your site - eg http://www.yoursite.com, NOT just www.yoursite.com
4. Enter your user name and password when prompted to do so.

Have you tried going to your site in IE and doing File>Edit with Microsoft FrontPage - if that option is not there in IE dtry doing Tools>Internet Options>Programs and making sure that FP is selected as the HTML editor.

Most people NEVER have this problem, so I really don't have a clue why this would happen. If you have other webs, can you open them live?

Can you open the web by Internet Explorer > File > Edit with Frontpage?

FP2002 will let you publish only select pages without comparing both webs. An ftp program would let you delete pages off the live web; you might be able to edit your guest book files with it ...no idea if that would cause problems with the extensions. MS and hosts say not to use ftp and extensions; some users haven't had problems with mixing the two.

At one point early on when I first tried to publish to the WWW using FP rather than use WS_FTP Pro as I had done before when the site was on another host I was able to access the site on the new server. I did actually update some pages by drag & drop and I was able to edit the Guest Book page on the server.

Later, after those successful operations, I attempted to install Personal Web Server and Front Page Extensions on my PC. It was a horrible experience which I don't think I was ever successful in achieving. In the process the MICROSOFT OFFICE TOOLS SERVER EXTENSION ADMINISTRATOR froze at the Tip of the Day screen, and I was never unable to unfreeze it. Using Norton, the program was always terminated when I tried to unfreeze it. Somehow, today, in playing around with it and Norton Crash Guard I managed to unfreeze it (I don't have a clue as to what I did different today than when I had been unsuccessful in many previous attempts), and it now appears I can access my site on the www host server using the IE File, Edit with Microsoft Front Page approach.

Assuming this is the case (and I certainly hope so), I am still confused since I know that approach was not necessary early on when I was able to open two instances of FP, one accessing my local hard drive and the other the www server. It was not necessary for me to go to IE and then File, Edit with MS Front Page.

Linda, I appreciate the link to the other thread, but that conversation is so far over my head that it doesn't help me.

The whole attempt to install PWS and FP Extensions on my PC was one of the worst PC experiences I have ever had, and it now appears that was the cause of my drag & drop problem.

Using the IE File, Edit with Microsoft Front Page approach only lets me eidt my index page. Also, there are no folders listed in FP, just the message "When a web is open, this view lets you organize its files and folders." in the right most frame.

I am no better off now than I was before except the Server Extension Administrator is not frozen, but SO WHAT?

Oviously, this problem has a solution since the process did work at one point in time.

Where do I go for help now?

- You do not need Frontpage extensions installed on your pc.

- When you said "drop and drag" in the above quote, did you mean between two open webs in Frontpage or with an ftp program?

- When things were working correctly, was that with the previous host or the new one? Was it before using ftp and only using Frontpage? The FP extensions on the server may have been corrupted.

Have your host reinstall the extensions, publish and then try again to open the web live. The host may need to manually reinstall the extensions.

Two open webs using FP, one on my hard drive and the other on the internet server.

The new, current host.

I haven't used FTP since switching to the new server. All uploading to the new server has been with FP and publishing.

The host has reinstalled the extensions.

The URLs (two sites) are www.usscoolbaugh.org and www.usntcbainbridge.org

All concerned -
I am able to publish the internet server web site using my laptop but not my desktop, I'm able to edit web server based pages from my laptop, and I can drag & drop between my hard drive web and the web server from my laptop. The same version of FP is installed on both machines.
Where do you suggest I look for differences between the laptop setup and the desktop setup? The problem doesn't appear to be with the internet host.

Admittedly, we're running out of ideas and that other thread doesn't show any hope of resolving this.

A full reformat of your hard drive *should* fix the problem, but that's quite a drastic step... unless you're due for a reformat anyway.

Linda & All,
It appears the reinstallation of FP (Actually I selected the Repair option) works.
I am able to access the web version, and was able to drag the GUEST BOOK page from the web to my hard drive.
Many, many thanks to all who responded.

Not so Frustrated anymore!
