Zipped Web on CD-Web site messed up on web server - 6/21/2002 10:32:40
Formatted my harddrive 2 weeks ago. I zipped up all my files for my web to one zip file and burned to a CD. Found out 1 week later that my web site on the internet server is all messed up. My top and left boarders are not working etc. I have recently reinstalled FP2000 to my system again and just need to know what I should do now to recreate my web the way it was prior to me formatting my harddrive. When I made the CD of the zipped files it was from my harddrive and not the web site.

Can someone please give me the step by step instructions on how I should recreate my web site.

Thanks
Mark

Have you tried unzipping and saving the files you saved on CD prior to formatting..?

Sorry, I am a little confused by your question. I have not unzipped anything yet. I have installed FP2000. What I figured was that maybe I have to unzip my files to one area of my harddrive, then us FP2000 to publish my web to another area of my harddrive and then finally publish to the internet web server.

Do I have this incorrect? Unfoturnately when I was using FP2000 I did not create too many web sites and basically only changed existing ones so therefore i do not have much experience in publishing for the first time.

Thanks
Mark

You may run into problems if you "saved" your files instead of "publishing" them to the CD.

Basically, I would recommend unzipping the files and saving them to your desk-top. Then open each web in FP.

You can then save them to wherever you usually save webs. The reason I would do it this way is because FP may recognize the fact the FP extensions aren't in the saved webs. (something that happens if you save rather than publish) It may ask if you want to apply FP components to the web when you open it.

I've never done this, so I'm speaking in theories...

If all esle fails, open your sites live and publish them back to your hard-drive.

Chances are that if you haven't changed anything on the live site, then the web was messed up when you published it... so if you grab whats online and go through it you should be able to fix the problems.

Someone else may have more insight on this, I publish backups to CD on a regular basis, but I've never had to retrieve one yet (knock on wood...)

Mark,

I have found through similar experiences that a way to back up FrontPage sites is by depending on the hosting company. They back up the server contents regularly. Contact your hosting company and ask them to restore your site to the last date that you are certain the site was correct.

For the sites that haven't been "messed up" on the server, open them "live" in FrontPage and publish to a folder in My Documents (I use "My Webs"). Choose "Publish All Pages..."

An alternate to opening "live" is to browse to the site in Internet Explorer, and choose "Edit in FrontPage" from the File menu.

Enjoy! It's your endeavor!
