Now it' s your turn.

I' ve been doing a lot of critiques, now I' m ready to take what you can throw at me.

The Sun City Anthem Computer Club is a member of the Association of PC Users Group. The Association is running a contest for the best Club web site. Out site has been around for a while, and is primarily directed towards the over 55 age group. Others are persona non grata.

I would appreciate your comments on improvement. The only change that I will not make is the use of Themes. All else is open!

The site URL is: http://www.myscacc.org

I look forward to your comments.

Hi Chuck,

Not bad. I am doing a club web site too, so I will study your site to get so ideas. I have used a template " stretch red" for mine and it looks good. Your site has a lot of material on it and is a little challenging to follow everything. I tried to access a newsletter with Adibe Acrobat but I got an error message. Is that part active yet? I will get back to you with some feedback after I have spent some time going thru your entire site. Good Job!:)

Lee,

I appreciate your comments.:)

The newsletters have been placed there monthly since March of 2001.

If you receive the error again, please give me the exact wording of the error. I certainly don' t want to submit a site to competition with errors in it.

I know most error messages are somewhat meaningless. In the early days of my programming career, we wrote one machine instruction after the other. In the logical flow chart, was alway an error situation. Invariably, the message that would be typed on the consol printer would be: " This error should not occur!"

The hit counter was reset four weeks ago when we moved the site from our own server to a professionally run site.

Charles,

You have lots and lots of good information and you managed it very well. The site is quite appropriate for your audience. I can tell you have done a lot of work.

I couldn' t open the newsletters. I didn' t get an error just the placement icon in the upper left hand corner. I just installed Adobe Acrobat 5.0. Would that make a difference?

I just checked my own web site and I got the same thing. Mmmm. Maybe something is wrong with my Adobe Acrobat.

Well Cliff, aahhh Chuck,:) I think it looks good. The newsletter opened up ok for me too. It' s obvious you' ve put a lot of work into it. My only thought would be to ditch the FP template when you have the time.

Terry,

I created the PTF from MS Publisher with Acrobat 4.0' s Distiller. However, I do use Acrobat Reader 5.0 for reading (occasionally, since Acrobat 4.0 is my default for opening from the Internet). Was there a specific newsletter that wouldn' t open, or was it all of them?

Mike,

Remember, my original post was that the themes were off limits to you folks. The reason is, that all folks that would be working on this site in the future will be volunteers. I believe that I can teach another person to take over much easier with the themes.

All of the rest of you,
Thanks

One comment on themes - even though I know it is of limits!!

You canuse themes and have, therefore, the ease of use you want for multiple users, without having to stick to the themes that ship with FrontPage.

I think this is a really good site, with lots of carefully provided information that targets an audience it knows and understands very well. However my first impression of it is ' Oops! One of those horrible FP themes!" I am sorry, but that was what it genuinely was.

It is very easy to edit your theme so that you do not use the default graphics and so on that are so quickly recognisable and so hackneyed.

The fact that you have used a theme means that changing the entire site is just a matter of changing the images in your theme and I really think it would be so worth doing.

To edit a theme just right click any page, select Theme and then the modify button on the bottom of the themes dialogue box. You can them modify all or any of the colors and/or graphics in the theme very easily.

Chuck,

Newsletter opened fine for me.

I think the site is setup well. I also liked your links.

I would agree with the others on the theme. But I also know you do not want to change them.

Charles:

Sorry I didn' t see your reply til now, but, I just tried all the newsletters and none of them brought up Adobe Acrobat for me. Just the place graphic.

I' ve had a recent crash of my system and am still working out the kinks, so I don' t know if it' s me or you.:)

I don' t know if you' ll check in again Charles, but I need to give you an update. I reinstalled Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and all of your newsletters open up perfectly now.

My registry was corrupted, so thank you, you helped me find out :)that I had a problem sooner than later. Thanks.

Just remember that just because your using themes doesn' t mean it has to really look like your using a theme...Then I recon I' m slightly biased hehehe...

The only thing I' m wondering is why switch from vertical navigation on the home page to the horizontal on the rest. I personally think it might look better to keep it all to the left, but that just an opinion of course...:)

Overall Great work on the site. Most of what makes a good site is good content and you have plenty of that!

Have Fun!

Scott,

The left nav buttons only appear on pages with children. When you are at the bottom of the food chain, there is no more!

Tom,

My hard drive self-destructed last week also. I bought a new on, and had to reinstall everything. I back up all data to a second hard drive on a second computer, so not all was lost! But, it is agravating!

The old hard drive has been set to all zeros without error, a thorough scan indicated no errors, yet I can' t write large files (i.e. backup of My documents) to it with out error.

The second hard drive on the computer that I am now is seven years old. It is where my back up for the other computer resides. Go figure...

At last count, 18 club member' s have had hard drive failures in the past six months. 16 were replaced under warranty! The manufacturers must be getting the message that their quality control is not!

Just a followup on my inability to backup to the old hard drive mentioned in my June 30 post.

The OS is W2k. We didn' t change the Fat 32 to NTFS format. To place files larger than 4GB, it must be NTFS. Easy job, I just moved the small backup files to the C: drive, reformatted to NTFS and move the files back. My current backup from the XP system is 6.2GB.

Similar operation on the XP system the second drive is now NTFS and it receives the backup from the W2k system.

Another operational note, the anti-virus programs scans both drives every four hours. I continue to work while it scans.
