Pantones to rgb in Photoshop - 6/26/2002 13:20:16
I' ve been told that Photoshop can convert pantones to rgb. How?

I know nothing about print design. Can you tell? :)

I' m not positive on the above, I could hazard a guess, but I don' t want to confuse you...

For print, is there a reason why you would go with rgb over a CMYK?

That' s a really simple two click process, and it applies to the entire file when you' re finished...

I' ll ask a friend and see if she knows...

It' s not for print. It' s for Web, but I' m supposed to match (to the extent that can be done) print colors given to me as Pantone values.

I read on some previous posts in this forum that there is a conversion chart I can buy, but it does seem logical that Photoshop would do this.

I use Photoshop 5, and in it you can select form a pantone color selector. Are the particular pantone values not included there?

I forget exactly where it is, since I don' t use it here at the office, but when you select your color there should be a menu choice for pantone values...

I' m still waiting to hear back from my friend.

Chances are the pantone values won' t be web friendly colors anyway - LOL!

EWD - nice resource... if that doesn' t help I' m not sure what will!

I tried searching the Adobe forums... no offense to Adobe, but those forums are a joke! Maybe I' ve just gotten spoiled here.

No word back from my friend, she must be out of town...

If you bring up the pantone color palette and select the pantone color they have given you, it should give you the equivelent hex value. You can then use the hex value either directly in your page or you can see the rgb value.

This may be too late for you but I do know how to do this. These instructions are for version 5.5 but 6.0 and 7.0 should be similar.

Click once on the foreground color on your tools bar. That should bring up the color palette. Click on the custom button and the palette becomes a Pantone color selector. You can either pull the slider down or use the right and left arrows or type in the pantone number until you find your color. When you' ve done that, just click on the picker button on the right and the palette will switch back to the RGB, CMYK, HUV version.
