Do-it-yourselfer who rides ' the little bus' needs advice - 6/27/2002 13:08:15
Have created this site by making page mockups in WORD, and then sending them to a someone who functions more as a html technician than a designer, that does the rest. They replicate what they see, without changing things. A friend provided some general SEO suggestions that we have tried to implement.

Would appreciate general site feedback, particularly on blind spots, weaknesses, & other issues.

Also have some questions.

1) General thoughts on using a high contrast, dark background theme; good and bad points of that.

2) More sites seem to be adding a google search box link. Does that increase a site' s ranking within google?

3) Getting ready to go through and add text descriptions to the images on the site (earth to me, come in me...). Any thoughts on utilizing that text to improve rank during the next re-spidering of the site?

Simply, for what it' s worth, this is my humble design opinion. When you look at the whole page, the colors are screaming at you, making you look away.

Not that your colors are bad. They are tooo much to occupy the whole page. What I like is the header and your drop down navigation. It works well although the blue on the drop down navigation is dead compared to the other colors.

To improve customer comfort, you need to have a white background and use the grid as a background around the white. Present your graphics and black text as cleanly and crisply as you can on the white background. Load time seemed a little slow so check your image sizes.

It' s those screaming tourqoise bolded and red bolded text blocks that are turning me off. Potentially, your site looks very good.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Your site looks good, but I agree with tterrifc, the colors are to bright.

The idea of a white background is great, and for the logo, I think it would look better in red and black as it is in the pdf literature.

To Many Trade Shows - 6/27/2002 17:04:07
Hi,

In my humble opion I don' t like the picture that is on the front page. It looks like a cow carcus. I really had to look hard at the site and read ( can you imagine) to figure out that you folks make really cool tadeshow stuff. The background and font makes my eyes hurt.

I go to plenty of trade shows and I think your audience looks for more bright clean and crisp presentations. If you were a booth a a huge tradeshow I would walk bye and co to the brighter booth next to you, (sorry).

I do like the diagrams that show how the banners and booths work, maybe a few more real world examples of designs on those pages would help me get a better perspective on how I, (the customer) would use it.

You might consider adding a page that compares the various manufactures products together. I really looked at the site from a buyers perspective because I need to buy new stuff for next years show season, and I got confused on the differences with your wide selection of products. I mostly do 10x10 booths but I was confused on all of the places I should look to even compare options.

I hopes this helps :) I was not trying to be harsh.

Thanks,
Barry

Paul,

The drop down links that work so well in IE 6, don' t work at all in Opera 6.03.

Only the banner appears in NN 6.2.3

Link to Google to improve ranking? Iffy...

Adding meaningful Alt Text to images will make it better for those with screen readers to understand what is on your page. As for this improving ranking, don' t make the mistake of repetition that may cause some search engines (SE) de-list your site.

Also, be patient when waiting to be recognized by the SEs, it can take from 4 to 26 weeks, depending on the site. Manually submit your site' s URL to 8 or 10 and forget about it. It will happen sooner or later.

Charles,

Thanks for more specific feedback. Will pass on the browser data to my webmaster. When I checked our stats for a given period of time, browser used broke down like this for 4242 sessions. Stats only track IE & NN through version 5.x of ea, so all version 6.x are listed in the ' Other' group.

Am more concerned about NN 6.2.3 than Opera. Assuming that the ratio of IE to NN in ' Other' is the same as for versions 5.x and earlier, there are 131 out of 4242 (3.08%) that are NN 6.x and 1 out of 4242 that are Opera.

Most active browsers by type and version:

IE - 2356 sessions (55.54%)
AOL - 893 sessions (21.05%)
Netscape - 510 sessions (12.02%)
Other - 477 sessions (11.24%)
WebTV - 4 sessions (0.09%)
Opera - 1 sessions (0.02%)
Lotus-Notes - 1 sessions (0.02%)

**********

Barry & Terry,

Am working on a new color scheme with lighter background and darker text rather than the current reverse image motif. Will post when it is up.

Thanks to all for outside perspective.

Hello trade_show_guy,

I don' t wanna beat a dead horse here but I would agree its a little hard to read. I was curious to see what it would look like with the header in place and the rest on a whit background.

Heres a image of it quickly thrown together. I think it might be a viable option?

:)

Troy,

Thanks for feedback above and beyond the call of duty! Am already leaning that way, but am probably going to drop the dark background in the header as well.

Will e-mail you what I am looking at, because this reply form is not letting me include an image.

Thanks again
