Color choices - 6/27/2002 13:52:38
Hi,

I have a new client, who is nice, but is making a stand.

She is insisting on a black background. I have never used balck as a background. I am having troubles deciding on what font color to use for text. It just all looks bad. She is set on a light powder blue for font color as her primary choice and I just feel in my gut (Yes that is one large area these days) that this doesn' t flow/look right but I am also at a loss for what does.

I have tried using color wheels to compare. I guess I am just " hung up" on the black and have a mindset that it looks bad.

Any suggestions?

Bria

If the black background is a must, I would suggest an off white text color.

Plain white just seems difficult to read against the black background. Using off white tends to make it more clear, at least to my eyes it does.

Good Luck with this one :):):)

I had a similar problem. My wife is a black & white photographer, so wanted black background. I used white, blue and yellow on http://www.fineartphotographic.com.

Hi,

Thanks, it just seems like such a depressing color and this is going to be an ecommerce site even.

Our Clients are always right - at least until they get negative feedback from others. Then, if they are clients from hell, they may turn around and start pointing fingers. Have your client sign off on the design elements, including all the colours (background, text styles, borders, buttons, etc). There are no rewards for " I told you so" but you will preserve your reputation.

Good luck with your project

Black is a horrible background to work on for most sites. I have had many clients who wanted it but only one who insisted - she originally wanted yellow text on a black bg. I got her to settle for tan, which looks sort of yellow but without the ' halo' effect that you often get on a black bg.

I used this color: #cccc99

I also think the colors used on this site sort of work pretty well, they use gray for the text but a sort of light blue for links, so that might make your client happy!

Nice free, basic message board available there too! I used it recently on an extranet that needed a no frills one.

Black may seem depressing, but is a very powerful and dramatic color.

You might suggest that if the background must be black, to use colored table cels on the page for the majority of the text.

A nice looking blue or green cel that appears to " float" on a black background may be appealing and will solve your black bg problem - especially if you' re able to incorporate a nice graphical flow to each page.

You' ll be able to incorporate company logo' s as well, repeating the colors will add to the companies " identity" on the web, and not look so generic.

Hi,

As always thank you for the suggestions.

Katherine, I do like the colors on yor example. I might have to have a go with them.

Bobby, like the table idea will also have to play with that.

Guess I just need to be more open minded in my thinking.

I hate to say it but this is my toughest customer yet.......my wife. Love her to death but man she is very set on her " creative input" , which I respect, just makes for a tough way is all.

No contract can outweigh that I guess ;).

Your wife?

Oh, man... just give her the black background and slink away quietly...

:)

If she' s anything like mine she' ll complain that you made the page " too black" and it' s hard to read... :)

Whoops! I would never refer to my lady wife as a " client from hell" . But then I quit saying anything about colours years ago. We have an agreement:
She picks the colours, I do the work, whether it is paint, wallpaper, fabric, or images.
Then if something has to be changed, it is always a revision, never a correction.
Cheers

Hi,

Ok, now your cracking me up!!!

Never said she was the client from hell, just a nice client making a stand on an issue (Guess that is what life is about eh?).

I ran Katherine' s colors by her and she actually smiled so I think I am in business. although I am sure some will change.

I do tip my hat to her as she is my content king/queen. She spits it out page after page. Even has keyword density ratios and seo attitude down pat. Gotta love her, couldn' t do it without her.

I think all the suggestions made here are very good, and the examples show how nice a site can look when using a dark background with something other than electric blue or pink text! (my eyes, my eyes!!)

The only other suggestion I would make is to use a clean sans-serif font, like Verdana or Tahoma (Arial in a pinch). To me it' s a much cleaner read than something like Times, especially in a high contrast setting.

On this site I' ve used the Outfront template Bluestar, which uses a black background. When It' s finished there will only be the black background and a variety of blues. I think that a black background only works when combined with a very limited color range.

Those of you that have read some of my posts in the past already know this:

" Quality" is defined as meeting or exceeding the client' s expectations! Even it the client happens to be a spouse!

Hence my post to get answers from people who have been there. You are correct though Charles :)

My main site uses a black background, I like it, then again I'm in a dark mood most of the time.

It is a great backing colour though as you can contrast with it so easily.

You can always mix it up with shades/ http://www.ganjataz.co.uk/
Or go with solid Black/ http://www.ganjataz.com/

Main reason I use it, it doesn't distract, & helps bring the attention towards the areas you actually want them. IMHO anyhoo.
