Upload \ Update Nightmare - 6/28/2002 14:31:49
I have taking over maintenance on a site using FP. The Server does not support FP. So I am using WS_FTP to Upload. Now taking into consideration I am new at this. I have done some test updates but pages are missing all the images. Then I have made separate sub folders and put the images for that page inside. If I play around with it moving images here to there and The planets are all aligned, It might work. But a very long process. and by that point I don' t know how I did it.Is this overkill? Easier way maybe? Basically looking for the best, fasted, easiest way to updated my site. I do have a nervous breakdown scheduled for 3:23pm today. Thanks for any help.

I would suggest that you make life easy for yourself, and get a new hosting company such as http://www.minnesotashopper.com at $8.95 per month and always use the FrontPage Publish feature using the http protocol.

There is really no need to have FP extensions on an FP site to still benefit from many of the advantages of FPs site management features. The most valuable is the updating of links to images and within the site generally as you move pages around. In any case the situation will often arise that you are doing a site for someone else and they already have hosting they are happy with and which does not have FP extensions. There is no reason to limit yourself to designing for situations where extensions are available. The most imprtatn thing is that you replicate the main directory structure of the site in FP on the server. The same folder/directory name exactly, the same location within the site for each page. You do not of course need to copy over all the FP files that are created - the _vti files and so on. I have never had a problem with paths when doing this and if you are, having done as I outlined above, then it may be that there is a problem with your paths period. Do you have the URL of a problem page we could look at - it might throw some light on the problem.
