FrontPage 2000 vs 2002 - 6/29/2002 10:34:28
The more I learn about the extraneous code put in a web page by FrontPage, the madder I get. Questions: Is it primarily FrontPage 2002 (which I use) that causes the extra code or does 2000 do the same? Should I uninstall 2002 and put back 2000 (though I' m not sure 2002' s files are backwards compatible)? I don' t think you can have both versions of FP on a computer at the same time. Does anyone know? Any insights about the program that brought us all here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gail

Actually, I think 2000 was worse at it! And 97 & 98 were unusable because of what they did to your code.

I am not sure that 2000 was worse. I don' t particularly find it puts in a lot extra, apart for using <div align=center> and <center> when aligning stuff - to be sure, to be sure I suppose!! I think when using FP 2000 alongside CSS (NOT the FP version of!) it writes very clean code indeed. If used as a straight editor, without any of the FP specific features like themes, FP DHTML and so on, it really is in my opinion much and unfairly maligned and writes code as well as any editor and better than many. But I see 2002 sites regularly here and the tables are littered with extraneous stuff - border-collapse especially, and border color #111111. That alone is enough to put me off upgrading. Other than the ability to tab between open pages, which would be handy but is not that major a thing) I have not really seen anything about 2002 that would encourage me to bother upgrading. I don' t need the sharepoint stuff, extra (or any) themes and would never use word art or the galleries. Is there something else wonderful that I am missing out on?

The only problem I know I' ve experience because of having both FP 2000 and 2002 installed on a machine is that J-Bots wouldn' t work right with either. Now I have one machine running 2000 and another with 2002

Well then, let me take the original question a step further. Would a website, created totally with FrontPage, be it 2000 or 2002, pass muster with search engines? Assuming one' s key words, phrases, etc. are impeccable, would a search engine reject the site because of FP' s extraneous code? thanks, gail

I don' t see a reason why any search engine would reject a web created with FP 2002. If you look at the Microsoft listings of really good sites designed wtih FP, also provided through the FrontPage fanzine, there really should not be a problem. I think good meta tags are important, however, and depending on the search engine, many may not even going go beyond that info anyway. And I agree with abbeyvet about the code being very clean (in both FP 2000 and 2002), esp. if you stay away from shared borders. I use external style sheets and my pages will pass muster from anyone who likes clean code.

Gail, All the sites I have done in 2002 are listed in the search engines. So I would say no they will not get rejected because of the codes in 2002. Erin
