Trying to access server logs? - 7/4/2002 22:35:48
I am trying to access my server logs through opening the files on the web server but can' t seem to find them anywhere. I have contacted my hosting company who tell me that I can access them if I ftp to my site and look for [foldername]. They tell me to make sure I " set the default remote directory to ' logs' " ?

I don' t have any other ftp software as I use Frontpage to publish the site - and can' t find out how to do this?.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter and help me figure out what they are talking about!?

Thanks
Emily

You don' t " have" to have any special software to FTP. You can do it from the command prompt. But, it' s a lot easier for most to use something like CuteFTP or WS_Ftp

You would access your site - change to the " logs" directory and FTP the files to your computer. But, now you' ll have the problem of being able to read them.

Doesn' t your host have a log analysis program? I' ve never heard of a host who didn' t.

Hi Gil,

yeas the hosting company have webtrends... but it' s been down for a week or so and is expected to be down for at least another week. I was wondering if I could access the logs to get information on site visits?

How do I change to the " logs" directory? Bear with me here... This is all a little new to me!

Thanks,
Emily

I think your host has to provide access to the raw log files. My ISP provides a folder W3SVC which contains my raw log files (W2K host). In IIS anyway, the log files aren' t available to a website by default.
