Can a digital camera have to many megapixels for online... - 7/6/2002 17:12:16
I just bought a Kodax dx3600, it has 2.2 megapixels. But I found that when i take a picture and upload it to my site it is huge. Like we are talking 220kb. And when i goto other sites there pics are like 25k. If I went out and got a camera with 1.3 mp, will this work as well? PS. none of my pictures will be printed off, they are soley for web use. Or do i have to open each pic up in an editor and reduse colours and resize? Thanks Jason

Check the actual heigth and width, as well as the resolution (a 72 dpi jpeg is usually recommened for uploading to the web). Do any cropping before you resize (note: make any photo enhancements after you resize and crop). Make sure when you resize that the settings are set to " constrained." Your editing software should be set to automatically resample. Both of these settings are usually the default. A 640 x 480 pixel digital image at 72 dpi actually will produce a printout of over 8" X 6," that' s why it looks so humongous on a monitor. Hi Jason For an image editor....try www.irfanview.com it is free and fairly easy to use once you get the hang of it. I usually set my jpeg quality to about 20% compression , image size to about 300 pix by 400 pix and you will get a good size file for the web.

Most digital cameras have settings for the resolution. If you are only going to use it for web, you should be able to set it to the lowest setting and, not only will you end up with a much smaller image but you' ll be able to fit a lot more images on the cameras memory.

Wow, thanks for the help guys. I checked my camera and the lowest setting i can take is called 600x900. which is damn near the entire size of my screen. I will be uploading thousands of picture onto the site, so if i have to resize all of them this will take a while. So, if I go out and buy a 1.3 megapixel camera, will I still have to do any editing? Thanks again Jason

Jason, Depends some on the settings that come with your camera. Some May let you go as low as 600X480 which is still pretty large. I use a 1 Megapixel camera for web photos and on the medium setting I still get 2.4MB photos. I' ve found the absolute easiest way to knock them down is in Paint Shop Pro. I resize to around 50% then use their JPEG wizard and get the file size knocked down to about 25-30 KB. The quality is still excellent for web use. Don' t hold me to this but I think the PSP batch conversion feature lets you do this with multiple photos. Reason I don' t use it is because I label each photo with description, time, date etc, resize and convert to JPEG all at the same time with the individual photo. Hope this helps Dave

Hi Jason, I checked the Help files in Paint Shop Pro and the way it reads you can convert a bunch of photos from various file formats to, say, JPEG all at once but I don' t find anything which deals with resizing unless you do each photo individually. If anyone knows otherwise I' m sure they' ll jump in here pretty soon. Dave P.S. Even if you have to resample and convert each photo to JPEG, you can do so very quickly with PSP. I usually have a dozen or so at a time and I can get them all done in just a couple of minutes. I take a 2.5 MB photo, resize (resample) to 50% then use the JPEG conversion also at a 50% factor and I wind up with a photo usually about 25-30 KB in size.

Me again Irfanview is small & free !! & does great batch conversion, even down to the " sharpen" for the finale.

I can' t speak for the other programs mentioned, but one of the reasons I like Photo Express is because of the renaming capabilities. You can view photos, reorder them manually and the name of each photo will change to reflect the move. This is an important feature for someone like me who takes large numbers of digital images, enhances them, then exports them into a slideshow program which is more tedious and time consuming to use to order photos. I order my title pages, etc. at the same time and in the same manner. Photo Explorer also lets you automatically rename files, which is convenient when managing a large number of similar or related files. I' d certainly try a free program. It always amazes me the neat features free ones have. But if your need exceeds that of the freebie, look around. A lot of these programs for under $30 have a multitude of useful and timesaving features for handling scads of pix and other types of files such as video. gail

Jason, Just a suggestion. Take the 1.3 camera back and see if you can trade it for Photoshop. Down load your camera' s images and save them. Open them in Photoshop and choose Save for Web from the File menu. You get to choose the size for the final image!
