" Backwards compatiblitiy" - site critique - 7/8/2002 14:27:55

I' d like some citiques of a few of my sites, most of which I made before learning a lot of good stuff at Outfront. If at all possible, I want to go " backwards" so to speak and clean up the html. I think the biggest problems can be found on home pages where I made the most changes and used the most tables.

I hope to improve my use of tables and cells; and learn to properly optimize sites for search engines. Tell is like it is.

I' ll only post one site at a time occassionally. Here' s the first:

www.lbevents.com

Much thanks in advance, gail

Gail,

Two things that I noticed:
1. My preference is for a bit larger text in the links. Personal preference of mine.
2. The ragged left text on the form leaves a bit to be desired: http://www.lbevents.com/invitation.htm

thanks, charles!

I went in and made some changes. I used 8 point verdana type instead of arial. A little bigger, though not much.

And I changed the arial narrow text to arial (#2).

Was wondering, did you happen to look at any of the other pages? I used arial narrow on them, too, in a number of instances: 10 point for testimonial quotes, and 8 point for credits. Do you think they are okay?

Gail,

I think everything looks fine except for the text labels and form fields that Charles mentioned. It doesn' t look neatly aligned.

Thanks, Swoosh,

Since I' m going to redo the entire page, now' s a good time to ask a few questions.

What' s best way to align fields within a form; with a series of stacked tables, or a table with many cells? I' ve always been hesitant to place a table within a forms table, but perhaps I' ve been incorrect.

Thanks,

gail

Gail,

Your form is certainly ledgible.

For that particular form I would use a table with 2 columns with multiple rows. Column 1 would be for text lables " right aligned" and Column 2 for the input fields " left aligned" . That' s just me though.

The site is very nice and everyone' s ideas are good. I saw one thing that I could contribute regarding your html. Your title and title tags should be the the first tags after the beginning head tag on each page. And the " Insuring Success" page jumps to the left margin.:)

Hope this helps.

I actually ended up using three columns so I could get the form looking more centered on the page. It does look better when correctly aligned.

The form now looks fine in IE6 and Netscape 6, but pretty bad in Opera. Why? Any suggestions?

I' ll work on rearranging the tags. Seems FrontPage doesn' t let you reorder them so I' ll have to venture into html view. :)
