It' s a Babys World - 7/9/2002 11:20:48
This is the beginning of my first non company site. It still has a lot of filling out to be done and some sections have little content as yet but I' d welcome any input or suggestions. I' m particularly concerned about load speed as it' s image heavy (testing at home on cable it seemed fine but cable isn' t the standard yet). Please let me know what you think.

Oops almost forgot Babys World

TIA :)

Looks good. Appropriate colors for the subject and very clear navigation.

If you would like me to dig it out I have a cgi script somewhere to set up a babyname chooser, with several thousand names in a db searchable by meaning, origin, sex, beginning letters or ending letters.

Might be a fun little addition and get some traffic in.

Thanks Swoosh, I was afraid of that. The (four) main images on the home page total almost 80 K added to the small one the page just kind of chokes. I think I' ll have to trim that 80 K by at least half.

Katherine, if you come across that script it might be fun to play with and it might just a a little something to the site. Thanks

Mike,

I don' t see a Home link on the sidebar. I think one might be helpful for those who don’t use the web a lot. Not sure the text Home at the bottom of pages is enough.

You' ve done a lot of work so it' s probably tedious at this point but I like to have seen some borders around the pictures, particularly on the home page.

For the ones that alternate, I' d like to see one pink border, one blue. Or perhaps just baby yellow for both. Sometimes for color-coordination, I use the eyedropper to pick up a border color from within a photo itself..

I think I' d add a bit more spacing between the Store Hours and the bottom of the photo; maybe a little extra spacing generally between the text and photos.

You' re not the same Mike who mentioned inadequate, are you?! :) Very lovely site; warm, welcoming, cuddly...just as it should be for a babys world.

Oh, one more thing.

I just noticed that some of the Brand Name graphics are links. This is not altogether obvious. When and where appropriate, maybe you can add small type underlined links that say something like:

More Bonivita styles >>

More EG styles >>

This way visitors will not miss out on the other product offerings.

Yea I was looking at that this afternoon. There is a link to the home page using the logo (on all pages but home) but who' s going to know? I' ll be adding it to the menu.

How about a touch of shadow on the images rather than enclosing them completely?

As for the store hours, it was requested by the client and it was inserted with too little thought. I' ll be working on the layout a bit more after I get this load speed beat. Whoa, did I say " client" ? That sounds a whole lot better than " the boss wants this done" . Same thing but still better. :)

The " notice of links" is going to be in the lead paragraph of each page, in fact it was there but I broke a lot of the " go no where links" so I could get some input from everyone here. I just couldn' t bear to not have the " bonavita" and " eg" links active though. Thanks for taking a look.

Katherine, thanks for the script, now I just have to find time to figure it out.

I don' t know if adding shadows to the photos would be too much of a good thing. You have created various company logos in that manner and they look nice. Another thought is to simply add a border thickness of probably not more than 1 pt. via the FrontPages picture properties menu ( but not on the photos where you' ve feathered the borders. They look perfect). There' s enough black on the page with the text that it wouldn' t look odd. But, imho, the photos would look better with a border.

Bravo!

Just so they' re intuitive for most visitors.

btw, I' m a Calvin fan too. I really miss him every morning. Tho some folk didn' t like him, I think the creator caught the spirit of many kids, both young and young-at-heart.

Hi Mike,
As you know from prior posts - I looked at your site with IE 6.0, 800 X 600 and 28.8 on 56K.

(1) http://www.babysworldonline.com/ took 40 seconds to load

(2) Others pages initially loaded fast after header graphic loaded to cache, but then slowed down as to subsequent images (large properties/size when viewed).

(3) " Baby Express" link worked, but will first-time user know to click on it, or simply think it a logo? (I' m old - I click everywhere :) )

Looked good Mike. No scroll bars, rather fast load for my connection.

Any additional help - let me know.

John

Hi John,

Thanks for taking a look. I appear to have some significant work to do to improve the speed, looks like I' ll be compromising graphic quality a bit. :)

You certainly must have patience if you think 40 seconds is a " rather fast load" I know that when I checked it for the first time from work (shared 56K running at about 3.5K/s :)) I almost decided not to wait for it. :):)

Hi Mike,

You' ll compromise quality if you keep redoing the same photo over again. For some it may be better to start over from scratch, though I' m not suggesting it specifically for photos on your site.

Additional random thoughts:

On further looking, my opinion is that the photos on the home page are probably a bit large; maybe in a few other places too.

Sometimes I reduce the overall size of a photo or graphic (and therefore load time) by selecting an image and resizing a tad via FrontPage, then resampling. I use the undo command until I get the size I like before resampling. This does not necessarily reduce visual quality, tho it can.

Also, have you considered using thumbnail images for some of the products on the interior pages, such as here:

http://www.babysworldonline.com/Collections/Bonavita.htm

Have you checked the file size of the header include? It' s all graphics. Maybe if you do some tweaking, it will help speed up all pages. For example, some if not all the graphics there are jpgs. They would be a much smaller file size if they were saved as gifs.

In fact, several of your graphics are jpgs (which can add to increased loading time) when they could have been gifs (often smaller in file size). I haven' t tried this from the speed perspective, however maybe you can quickly convert the appropriate ones by using the Set Transparent Color tool on the white background of each jpg that is NOT a photo. If it doesn' t reduce page loading time, I wouldn' t approach it in this manner.

PS I noticed you placed a comment to yourself somewhere " add sassy." I was just recently told about the add comments feature in FrontPage. Place your cursor where you want to add a comment, then Insert > Comment. It really is a wonderful feature to place notes for yourself which will not be seen on the web.

Ok, I' ve squeezed the header graphics down as much as my limited graphics knowledge allows :). I' ve also changed the images on the home page so things should be much quicker there (I also like the look a little better). I' ll move on to the images on other pages as I can.

Gail, to your point on reworking an image. I try to keep a virgin copy around so if needed I can start from scratch. I do any resizing in Image Composer, every time I try doing things like that in FP things just get screwed up. :) As for converting the images to gifs I' m afraid my graphics abilities haven' t reached custom palettes yet.

Everyone, your points are all well taken and appreciated, I' m working from the suggestions here to tweak the site.

Thanks again to all.

Mike, one final thought.

Saving a graphic as a jpg or gif is quite simple!

Just select the desired file format when you save or save as. Image composer will walk you through various settings such as compression amount for a jpg, or transparency option for a gif.

You may find this site helpful:

http://web.bentley.edu/empl/c/rcrooks/toolbox/imagecom/index.html

Typically when preparing images to upload for the web, photos should be saved a jpgs; line art and similar graphics as gifs. There are exceptions, of course, but this is the general rule.

Believe me, saving an image in the right format can make a huge difference in file size.

The site really looks great!

Gail,

Thanks for the link. It looks like it might come in handy. If you (or anyone else) are interested here' s one I dug up that abbeyvet posted for Bill a while ago. http://www.pioneeris.net/ashton/IC/

I think my biggest problem optimizing images is being a quality manager, I just don' t like seeing the distortion. :) I' ll have to get over it if I don' t want people leaving because the page took 5 minutes to load. :)

Hi Mike,

Like the site. Only thing I thought to mention was the top navigation. The images all have the trailing hyperlink blue line. I took a peek at you code thinking I would find you hit the space bar at the end but that was not it.

I think it is the way you having the closing </a> tag and closing </td> placed. Here is a snippet from them...

<a href=" products/strollers/strollers.htm" >
<img border=" 0" src=" images/new_sm_images/twin_stroller_62.jpg" alt=" Strollers from Combi, Peg-Perego, Graco and more." width=" 62" height=" 72" >

</a>

</td>

Where I think this would get rid of that effect...

<a href=" products/strollers/strollers.htm" >
<img border=" 0" src=" images/new_sm_images/twin_stroller_62.jpg" alt=" Strollers from Combi, Peg-Perego, Graco and more." width=" 62" height=" 72" ></a></td>

I used NN 4.79 on Win XP Pro set to 1024X768 res..

Brian

Thanks Brian,

I was aware of the " little lines" in NS 4+ but hadn' t a clue. It didn' t show up in Opera or NS 6 just in NS 4+. Your suggestion did the trick and much appreciated.:)

Thank You
