What do you think - 7/9/2002 11:42:37
The Following is a website for a Public Library
Montville Township Public Library

There are a few things I know could stand for some improving, Like the Left Side Menu, its a frame I used a frame cause I didn' t like the way it looked as an include page cause it just stopped in the middle of the page and with the frame it stays on the left no matter how far you scroll, I also made sure that any external links open in a new window or the whole page so visitors don' t get stuck in the frame. Personally I like the way it looks with the frame if there is a better way that will allow me to keep the menu with the rollovers static on the left side I am game, btw I searched for the page with google and the correct page came up.
Another thing is the Picture at the top of the first page I tried to make it a transparent gif (using Image Composer) but it looked bad so I just kept it a Jpeg and am Trying to match the background color to the background color of my site but I can' t seem to find the Right Webfriendly color, Is there a way to make it transparent with out losing quality? Or Should I just lose the faded Edge? It looks ok In IE but In Some versions of Netscape you can tell the two colors apart.
Those are two of my main concerns but any other comments or suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

looks ok - I think the side menu works ok as long as search engines find both pages and stick them both together :)

As for the picture at the top - if you save it as a 8 bit PNG (with alpha transparency) it will save as a transparent without losing the quality. Failing that, resample the image at a res of 600, save as a gif and then resize it.

How do I do that with Image Composer.. I can save the file as a .png from the save as screen but How so I specify 8 bit? I tried just saveing as .png and it just had a black box around it and when looked at in IE didn' t appear transparent.

Thanks For you Help

Hi Rajman,
Wow - first of all thanks - Thanks for the memories! :) I grew-up in Englewood and a portion of the family dates to the 1790' s/1800' s in Morris County. Most buried in Rockaway and Randolph! Rt. 287 runs through what was my uncle' s farm.

Looked at your site with IE 6.0, 800 X 600 and 28.8 on 56K.

(1) Micah' s correct as to the image at the top: 21 kb as to library. Slowed loading of the page. Waving cat also large at 40 kb. Resizing images will help.

(2) Why such a large image for " Google Search" are they a sponsor?

(3) Copyright shows 2000.

(4) Have you considered a main navigational bar on all pages as to website links? If I click a link, without using the " back" option, I' m lost. Navigational bar will help to keep your visitors moving forward.

(5) " Childrens' Department" shows " Childrens" link on home page.

Thanks again for the memories of an ancestral home :)

John

John,
Thanks for the tips, I will defiantly resize the two pictures, there was no particular reason for the google search to be so big, so I' ll decrease the size of it. I will also put in a nav bar at the bottom with all the links. Thanks for all the ideas, I am glad I was able to stir up so old memories, I live up in Jefferson Township right on the edge of Morris County and pretty close by to Rockaway and Randolph, I drive to work on 287 every day. I am sure things have changed a bunch since those days.

Thanks again for the tips.
RAJ
