Reesy -> 98 & PWS to 2000 Pro & IIS Problems (7/18/2002 6:04:43)

I have just had my PC upgraded from 98 to 2000 Professional - I was using PWS (on my PC) to host a development intranet site which is mostly ASP(JavaScript) pages with various database connections.
This has been working absolutely fine for nearly a year both on my PC and another PC also using 98 and PWS as the ' Live' version.

However... now I have 2000 I am having a nightmare with IIS - The first page (a login screen) works fine, validates a password on a database and calls the main screen (which also works fine) - It accepts a customer number and displays information from various databases. It has links to ' drill down' screens which open another window. At this point (ie. trying to load another page in
another window) The page remains blank. The loading progress bar very slowly gets to about half way then stops.
Once this has happened I can' t do anything else at all - even IIS help which is html pages will not load untill I restart IIS.

ARRGGHHH - It' s driving me potty!! I' ve been trying for days to get this working.

It must be an IIS setting - The web site has not been altered at all since working correctly on PWS and I have tried on 3 different PCs with IIS installed with the same result.

Can anyone help before I turn to drink, PLEASE!

Cheers,
Severely distressed of England [:D]

Were you logged in as an administrator when you installed IIS?

Do you have Norton Script Blocking on?

Reesy -> RE: 98 & PWS to 2000 Pro & IIS Problems (7/19/2002 4:20:51)

Hi Doug,

Yes I was logged on as administrator.

I have Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition but couldn' t find anything in help about script blocking.

I don' t think script blocking is on though because the two pages that work ok have asp javascript and client side javascript. Plus the screen still hangs when calling a simple html page with no scripts.

Hmm, just to let you know I use XP Pro here for asp/db development without a problem. One thing that can cause your symptom is a bad network setting, or a network binding order problem.

There are special considerations if you' re using an access db on a different computer.

If you are using Access db' s, make sure they are Jet 4.0 (Access 2000+) and that you' re using an ole db connection. XP comes with MDAC 2.6 installed, and doesn' t have older drivers for Access 97 ODBC drivers.

What' s on this page? something on this page is looping?

Reesy -> RE: 98 & PWS to 2000 Pro & IIS Problems (7/23/2002 5:11:05)

Hi caywind,

There ARE a number of database connections which show repeating information on this page but it works fine using PWS on windows 98 - if there was an infinate loop I would have thought it wouldn' t work on PWS either.

I noticed in the help that there is a 10 connection limit. Would each database connection count as a server connection perhaps or is one session a connection because I do have 11 database connections on this screen.

Cheers, Reesy

By systematically removing bits of code I have traced the problem to a particular database connection.

I have put this connection in a page on it' s own and recreated the problem + removing the problem from the original page.

The test databindings window connects fine and displays the correct details but when running through the browser It hangs IIS still.

A couple of times when this has happened Restart IIS has given the error " The service cannot accept control messages at this time" .

If I view source on the ' hanging' page it shows ...

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC " -//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" >

which is not in my source at all.

Do these messages mean anything to anyone?
It' s very frustrating that it works fine still with PWS on 98

Bit of a breakthrough...

The server is hanging becuse a process DLLHOST.exe is using 100% of the CPU

This process is only stopped by restarting IIS

I have found various threads on various sites regarding DLLHOST.exe using up all the CPU (suggesting it is an IIS / Windows 2000 issue and not a falut with my site) but can' t find a solution.

Any clues?

Each database uses two connections. Sorry to take so long on the replies. Got really busy around here....

tend to agree in light of the quirkiness of the problem. BTW are there any entries in the logs? If you got a message then an entry should have been written to the log file.
