New Site - 7/23/2002 13:18:18
I built a small web site for my hockey team. There really isn' t any content right now (nor will there be any traffic until October). Any insight on how I can improve this site would be great. Brewers Hockey Team.

P.S. Please ignore the blatant rip-off of the Milwaukee Brewers logo ... the team is just an intramural hockey team.

I would definitely put your " Brewers" logo at the very top of the page, like to the left of your other header info.

You might try to infuse a little more color into the layout. I don' t have any brilliant suggestions at the moment as to how to implement this idea, however.

I like the mouseover descriptions of the links, although I' m not crazy about the red border around that text. But hey, I did suggest more color, didn' t I? :)

I like the look of the site overall. It' s clean and pretty well organized. Liked the mouseover captions on the navigation. Guess I agree with Kokomo about the logo at the top and a bit more color. Maybe using the teams colors in different areas, something like that. But hey, I' m just a novice, too. Whaddooayeno?

Thanks for your replies. I will try to incorporate more color ... I don' t know how yet though. Got any ideas?

As for the Brewers logo ... I kinda like it where it is (different for the sake of being different).

yep - I gotta go with the others too - I like the logo at the top - having said that - its a NICE LOGO!!!!

As for incorporating the colours more ...... how about make the table around the " info section" a colour, like dark blue or something? Maybe a fat line blue box around the text top left that spans the whole page?

I like the site alot, the mouse over stuff lookes real good

however the " random saying" button seems alittle out of place and doesn' t really match well with the rest of my page

Thanks - 7/24/2002 9:56:46
Thanks for all the input.

I got rid of the random saying button ... that really just was a fun project anyhow. I also make the border thicker around the info section to add some colour.

As for the logo, I tried moving it to the top of the page (which seems to be the unanimous idea), but the logo and the text don' t fit across the page on one line (which I would like to do).

What about moving the logo to the top and putting the links, etc. to the bottom??

Hi Matty:

Here' s an idea. Probably not as good as Troy, who, in my opinion, comes back with ideas at the speed of light (in other threads). So, I wanted to try it, too. It' s just a quickie. This is what I think everyone is asking you to do:

:)

Thanks tterrifc! The top image is great! So great infact, that I am using it on my site.

I got the new image up on the web ... it' s not fully functional yet ... but tell me how it looks ... I think it looks awsome! Check it out here.

Thanks for all the help.

P.S. tterrifc - do you have any idea what the colour code is for the gold-looking part of the image (either rgb-triplet or Hex ... I don' t care)? I would like to match the text to the image, but I am having a tough time doing it.

Hi Matty,

Can' t give you the color match because I just used color picker on your logo to quickly come up with the example header image. I gave no thought to the color and when I used the color picker again, I cannot get an exact match. Sorry for that.

I' m thrilled you like the header, but I would like you to put it into a table, say 775 pixels wide and then align center the header image within that table. Then make the rectangle holding the changing text below a little wider to fill-up the page more (it' s at 370 pixels wide now, maybe 500 or 600 pixels wide and center it. Am I making sense to you? Then center your contact information below in the tan text and that should give you a complete layout.

If you left align everything, then you could run another coloumn on the right side with some information that you update all the time. Hope this helps.

Matty, your site is very good and has some very nice working features. Keep it up and thank you.

I' m not entirely sure what you mean, so I guessed.

Is it anywhere close? Brewers Hockey

Thanks again for all the great input :)!

Great job Matty.

Okay, I would drop the outside border on the table. What I meant for you to enlarge is the little blue box with the text inside. It is a table that is 370 pixels wide. Could you make it wider with more text. It looks lost on your site.

You did great with the table for the header and site layout. Do not set a height, just remove the border and all will be fine.

Perhaps others could jump in and give additional advice. It is looking very good. You need to fill in your pages a little more. That' s why I thought you could add your contact info to bottom of every page.

Okay, here is what I' m saying. This is just a rough idea and I didn' t want it to be too big for the forum.

:)

The colors may not be so right ' cause I worked so fast. You need to fill-up your space more. The contact us goes on everypage. " Go Team" is just a quick idea.

The right tan blocks could hold the team member' s names or something.

See what I mean?

Hope this helps.

Take a look at the site now ... I think I' ve got it pretty close!

The image where you had the " Go Team" image is now our school logo. Does this image look out of place? Do the colours match, or does it really matter?

Thanks for all the help so far!

Brewer' s Hockey

P.S. How do you embed the image into the message like that?

Matty:

You catch on quickly. I' m liking it a lot. I' m primarily a graphic designer with a web certification. I do not claim to be an expert at web design.

Now, that you have a layout that flows nicely, focus now on the details. Consistency and color are very important, especially if you want to look professional. So make sure all your tans are the same one color (sample the tan in the logo) and then make sure your right column is perfectly aligned with your navigation bar. Now, with your university logo, you have added green and navy, plus you have red in your " Contact Me" link. So, how are you going to tie in one to three colors? Three is too many to add too much to your clean design of three colors (tan, black and that pale lavendar blue in your rectangle) so pick one to use more often.

Since " Brewers" is the primary focus and intent of the site, I would get rid of the colors in the university logo and pull back on the opacity to about 25%, like this:

:)

These are just some of things you should think about. Think about lowering the opacity on your right tan rectangles too.

Hope I' m not steering you in the wrong direction.

If you want to embed a picture in the post. First publish your picture to a server. It the post, select the image tab (top) to get the image tags and type your address where your image sits between the image tags and then go down below to check " Click here to upload, Embed picture in post.

Good luck.

RE: New Site - 7/27/2002 13:30:43
It' s good to hear that I am learning quickly. I am a second year university student taking a combined business/computer science degree. I will be taking a course that deals with some of this stuff next year, so this is good practice!

I have include all of your suggestions. I did my best to align everything, I got rid of the marquee (that was my own doing ... no need for it with the news table down the right side), and I coordinated all the colours. There are a few things I can' t do:

  • I can' t perfectly match logo colour to table/text colour, and
  • I don' t know how to change the opacity of the right table cells.

Thanks for your time and effort so far :)!
