Hi Mark,

You remember that I like SQL.

SAMS books are really good, they can be a good start.

The best.

hhammash -> RE: Good SQL Book (1/18/2003 23:22:45)

Hi Mark,

But you miss lot of little important details in these books.

The best to buy would be reference manuals. They used to be great. Maybe it has gotten to the point where there are so many things to know it is impossible to get it all in an 800 page book???

On any subject you should really get 2 or 3 books on that subject. Even then you still won' t know all you need too.

I' ve seen and dealt with publishers whose books were worse. All in all, SAMS is still a good bet. Especially for starters.

Professionals need engineering manuals these days..

Hi,

Right for starters.

There is the Bible editions of computer books, the developer edition ...etc for advanced.

Reference will be used for advanced users who are looking for a certain info.

Some reference books come as tutorials too, but some are alphabetically ordered by the reference case.

I have

" The Waite Group - Turbo C++ Bible" by SAMS.

Believe it not, what a piece of crap!! It left nothing but questions in my mind, did not cover anything but the basic' s and just sits in my library.

It just goes to show you, you never know what you get when you buy it.

As a matter of fact, the more I think about it... I have 4 assorted 1200+ page manuals from SAMS on C++. And the EXACT same content was covered in each book. They varied from each other at all. This pissed me off. At $65.00 a pop, thats $260.00 plus tax and shipping... for basically the same thing.

THAT' s a NEGATIVE...

Long Island Lune -> RE: Good SQL Book (1/19/2003 15:56:02)

Correction:

quote:

They varied from each other at all.

Correct sentence:
They varied from each other NOT all all.

Bad grammar I know..................

Hi Mark,

Since we are talking about SQL.

Oracle has SQL+ and PL/SQL

SQL Server 2000 has SQL, but what is the programming language of SQL 2000 server. Is it only SQL or it has it' s own (might be VB).

Long Island Lune -> RE: Good SQL Book (1/20/2003 15:55:07)

I' m not technically sure.

I just kept using SQL, .ASP and VBScript [&:]

Too busy to actually read the thousands upon thousands pages of on-line " crap" that came with it... I could really use a manual. Sometimes MS gets carried away with the NET and throws everything on it and expects you to spend you life searching for it. Annoying!! I WISH they would stop that. For the kind of money they ask for their products you' d think they would GIVE you a manual!!! [:@] [:' (] [:o] [8D]

Can I curse here _____%&*#%@(!#%$^&______ ???

hhammash -> RE: Good SQL Book (1/20/2003 16:03:36)

Mark,

Right, right, right.

Few years ago when we purchased Windows, Office (at work) we received a very nice and elegant package that has a set of Floppies, a set of CDs and very good manuals, nice tutorials and references.

Lately we received only CDs and a link from where to download a reference.

I have lot of e-books but I don' t like to read. Or you can use e-books but you need another computer for that, you read on one computer and practice on the other.

Lot of online reading hurt the eyes.

Thanks LLL

This is WHEN I start cursing. It' s hard to read content on the NET. I hate it. Forums are one thing. Microsoft manuals with 500 chapters and 200 sub-chapters are another!!!

Hi Mark,

It is annoying specially if there are images and you have to click on the image link to see it.

Thanks Mark.

But sometimes we have to, I just print chapter by chapter to read.
