stingger -> \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/26/2002 14:03:34)

I saved my web-site to CD...well all of " My Webs" folder. Only to find it
had moved to CD....so I re-copyed it back to my docs, but now every
time I try to edit my web pages or load them in FP I get.

Server error. Cannot open file " C:My Documents\My Webs\stinggers realm\vti_pvt\service.lck" for writting

What can I do ?? or what have I done wrong ??

bobby -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/26/2002 14:23:40)

I ran into this the first time I tried to " back-up" my webs... you can' t " save" to a CD, not all of the files that FP needs are copied along with the files.

It' s best to " publish" the site to your CD Rom, then publish back to your hard drive when you want to retrieve it.

swoosh -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/26/2002 14:30:11)

This is some info I got from researching your error message:

Server error: Cannot open file " usr/local/directory_name/service.lck" for writing.

During installation of the Server Extensions, FrontPage attempts to create a zero byte lock file (.lck) in the named directory so that no changes can be made by other users or programs on the system. When the installation program cannot open this file, it is usually because the lock file has not been successfully created. This can happen because the permissions for the directory prevent the installation program from writing to that directory.

Obviously by " COPYING" your web the " service.lck" file didn' t go with it as Bobby stated above.

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/26/2002 20:17:01)

how do I get everything back ?? do I have to do it from my we-site?

More info please :)

Help ??

swoosh -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/27/2002 19:29:18)

Stingger,

Open up your website live and " PUBLISH" to a location on your hard drive

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/28/2002 17:48:06)

I opened my site live....but I did' nt publish it useing FP as the extensions are' nt supported in this country.
I chose edit with frontpage while still at my site....but it took over ten minutes and the publish option was still greyed out.
I went to the lycros ftp and try to down load files from there to my
hard drive but it said the files were read only and to choose another
name for them...so I' m still stumped and can' t up-date my pages [&:]

So I don' t know what to do now [:(]

swoosh -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/28/2002 20:43:40)

stingger,

The FP extensions are required in order to edit a website live using FrontPage.

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/28/2002 20:57:40)

well I guess I did' nt edit it live then.

I went to web-site....I tryed edit site useing FP and it did' nt work
I' ve said all this above

so what do I do ???

guillermo5000 -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/30/2002 5:10:03)

If your copied the files to a CD, the file permissions were changed to Read Only. When you copy them back to your HD they are still Read Only.

You need to remove the Read-Only attribute.

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/30/2002 8:18:14)

Removed the read only attribute.......I get page not found error

So I deleted one page then I went to lycos.....download the page
and I still get page not found error.

Hmmmmm the power of FrontPage.....nothing seems to have worked
so far its looking like I' m going to have to start again from scratch.

Charles W Davis -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/30/2002 9:20:20)

stingger,

FrontPage web hosting with FP extensions is available in the UK at:

bobby -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/30/2002 12:26:47)

You must have FTP' d the site up in the first place..?

This might be a long way around, but hopefully will save you some time over starting completely from scratch...

Try opening each page individually from the server, View Source, copy and paste into notepad, then into a new web in FP.

You should be able to retrieve all of your html this way without having to start over completely...

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/30/2002 16:53:13)

Thx for the sites charles but they all charge fee' s :(

I used lycos up-loading system, abit like MSN communities, I did
try copying and pasteing but there are alot of graphics & it did' nt look
to good.

I think its going to easier all round to delete the 15meg thats up &
about and start again from scratch

knowing NOT to copy my web-site.....so much for technology [:' (]
which also leads me to think if I did' nt use FP to publish how do I
back my webs up in future ???

Anyway thanks Charles & Bobby :)

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/30/2002 20:34:27)

Well I tryed to write a brand new site and guess what?

service.lck again.....so it must be something I' ve done :(

garry -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/31/2002 0:31:22)

Hi Stingger & others

Try EXPLORE and locate your website on your harddrive. Get into the VTI_PVT folder and DELETE the service.lck file. ( Yes delete it) Then right click both the remaining " service" " services" files and uncheck properties from " read only" .

THis will enable you to get your web functioning again on your hard drive in Frontpage as before.

It will upload the whole site from your hard drive if you wish to make modifications to the WWW on your existing site out there.
(It does this because it recognises that your Hard drive site is now 100% " new" since there are no service.lck files and overwrites the www site) ( but hey ! you have control of your site again) ( once uploaded it is business as usual)
Publishing from www back to your hard drive is going to take the same time.

If you are on a slow modem, you can check the " publish" status for many of your 15meg of images to " dont publish" and over time manually uncheck the images so they filter through onto the www server (they are there anyway) ( ie 5mb each time)

NOW !! next time get yourself a CDRW and " Format it" through your cd burning program (takes 25-40 mins)then you should be able to " Publish to your E drive cdrw or whatever and then if going to a different PC , publish from the cdrw disk to your new harddrive.

And yes I have been through this all before, after formatting the HD & having just purchased a new PC this week & realising one web was not " published" to CD.
Found that it is just as easy to publish from the server (for smaller sites)
This also happened when I went from FP2000 to FP2002.

Cheers from the Outback

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/31/2002 8:47:18)

I used the find folder option on my entire HD there was no
vti_pvt or service.lck. So I tryed the CD I copied to no luck
there either.

I re-moved and re-installed Front Page....guess what?
no luck there either [:o]

looks like its doomed to float in cyber-space un-updated
forever, and I can' t even make a re-placement.

garry -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (7/31/2002 20:19:15)

Go to the folder that your web is in.
It should be there with your images folder

stingger -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? (8/1/2002 19:35:01)

nope....not there....I' ve checked all the folders in my webs and its not anywhere [:o]

Been just going through something similar. Make sure before you search that " hidden files and folders" are turned on.

Control panels > Folder Options > View tab > Select " Show hidden files and folders"

smartline -> RE: \vti_pvt\service.lck ??? CROC HOPPERS CURE WORKED FOR ME.. (7/26/2004 13:21:10)

[:D]Brilliant.. Takes a croc hopper from the real outback to solve my problem here in the dripping wet middle of England.

So is it all down to 'hidden files not moving or is there something else at work here? hence the two system files having to be deleted..

But if you copy the site folder in its entirety with 'Show all files' set in folder options does this kill the problem of windows not copying 'Hidden' folders and files? I'll try it and let you know, as soon as I finish this dreamweaver manual. Frontpage, ARRRGH. ..

In the meantime.. Mega thanks to Garry for the solution.

Cheers mate, I owe you a beer.

Hi,
I am new here, just searched the internet and found your answer. I just want to say thanks Garry for your post. I was so stumped when I couldn't open my web files I had just published to my cd via ws_ftp. I had not had this problem with Front Page not opening my files before and I didn't even know what the vti_piv folder was for! I thought maybe the problem was with the new ws_ftp pro that I had just downloaded, a setting or something that I was missing. I really try not to touch the folders that I haven't created and do not know what they are! I didn't want to cause more problems, anyway, your solution helped me fix the problem in minutes, for something I was frustrated about for days, just had not had the chance to search for the answer. Thanks again!
Have a great day!
Christina

Hi there. I found this discussion using a search for the .lck file. I haven't published my web yet but I had the same problem as Stingger whereby I saved all my web info to a cd after a BIG pc crash. I didn't "publish" the info. I was getting the same message as Stingger and tried all the basic suggestions such as selecting files and making unticking the "read only" box. I also deleted the .lck file as suggested. None of this worked and I actually ended up with no images when I tried to edit them. Eventually, as a last resort, I selected the "my webs" folder, brought up the properties of the entire folder and unticked the read only box. IT WORKED and I am now able to edit my web again. Maybe I'll get round to publishing it next! Hope this helps future searchers with the same problem. Presumably Stingger has it sorted by now! Hope so.

This is one of the best threads here—for a newbie like me. This thread is what first brought me to OutFront. [:D] Garry's post is the highlight of my cheatsheet. [:D]
