Editing live - 7/27/2002 21:32:57
When editing live, is it okay to delete something from the source? I have changed some buttons that I created when editing live and I want to delete them. Thanks.

Sure you can delete while editing live. Just remember to save upon closing.

To edit live, one way is to open FP and click FILE>>OPEN WEB and in the folder name window type in your URL including the " http" for example " http://www.yourdomain.com" . This will open the site from the server on which it resides, so any modifications done here only effect the site on the server and not the web on your local hard drive.

If your just editing your site from your local computer then your modifications are only rendered on your computer and not on the actual web. So any pages you have modified need to be published to the server.

P.S. If you do " Edit LIve" as explained above, from time to time you will want to publish the site back to your local hard drive to have an updated version as a backup on your local machine.

I hope this helps

Okay, this is the way I have been doing it and its exactly the way I want it when I preview in browser, but the changes do not appear on my actual webpage. Why is that happening.

Try emptying your cache, you may be pulling in the page prior to it' s modifications.

I went ahead and deleted the temporary internet files, but that didn' t help either. It also said to go to tools and recalculate hyperlinks, but I couldn' t find that selection. Nothing seems to be helping. Thanks.

Hi carodolls,

After you edit your site pages live, you need to save them and then close your web and exit FrontPage. Then Refresh your site in your browser and you should see your changes. If you then want to have your hard drive file the same as your site on the server, you then click Edit with FrontPage and Publish to your hard drive file. Then they will both be the same. Hope you can get it to work for you.:)

I tried what you told me and it still didn' t work. It is like my webpage in set in time and none of the last two changes have shown up. Is there any way to find out what is going on?

carodolls,

Check to see if you have both of these ' home' files on your server:

index.htm
default.htm

If so delete the one that you didn' t expect.

Swoosh I have a problem when I input the name of my site in the open web folder name window I get a error " The file name location or format ' http:\\dirtyrc.com' is not valid. Type the name and location in the correct format such as c:\location\file name." then ok is my only option. X

Exact error except it shows www in the error. If you try to connect swoosh does it pop up a login box? Possibly it is FP extension problem on my hosts server? X

Okay, Charles, I deleted the default file and left the index.htm which has the page I want. Now do I publish from my computer to my page?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Charles. I deleted the default.htm file and republished and my changes are there now. This is answered prayer. Why did that file show up and how can I prevent this from happening again? God Bless You!
