FrontPage will create thumbnails of your pics for you... it does a decent job.

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (7/31/2002 15:03:07)

bobby,
actually I want this for sevral things that I' m hand coding. I love to do the coding by hand, though I can see that front page does make it easier, however these are already works in progress.

So since I wan' t to keep the knowledge in my had as far as the coding goes, I still plan on doing the hand coding, even if it is only with play around and change pages. (?) hope that last sentence makes sense![:D]

thanks for the info on the one for front page. I' m looking forward to using that one as well.

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (7/31/2002 15:05:14)

Thanks erin, I had this one before and never installed after a format. I think I' ll go and check it out again.!!

How are you doign??????

bobby -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/1/2002 10:43:30)

Even if you' re hand coding you can use FP to create the thumnails... it will save the smaller pic as pic_small.gif in the images file of a web... then you can just copy it from there into whatever file you' re using for your web...

But if you' ve found another one you like, I' d stick with it!

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program?/Bobby (8/1/2002 16:24:56)

Bobby:
How would I go about doing that. Sounds like it would be a lot easier than the hours I have spent searching for a program. Also, could you use the web gallery to do the same thing?

What I need are the thumbs to create a table listing items description and prices for a course that I have been working on.

The web gallery would be for a family site that I am working on.

I would definately appreciate any help that you could supply me with. I tired the irfanview, however (I' m sure that I could have done something wrong) When I created the thumb with the html, it gave me a page with the infrview name on it. Not exactly how I would like to set up what I' m trying to do.

bobby -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/1/2002 17:50:59)

Create a new web in FP, then on a new page and insert the graphic that you' re trying to thumbnail...

Now click on it and use FP' s auto-thumbnail feature, it should shrink to a thumnail size on the page... now click the save button...

It will save the thumbnail as picname_small.gif in the new web. (Will also save the full size image, but that' s of no consequence)

Do that for all the images you' re trying to thumbnail and close the web.

Now you can browse to that web, open it up (without FP) and there are your thumbnails ready for copy > paste into whatever folder you want them in...

Just rename them if you like and voila! Thumbnails!!

Now just go back to the " new" web and delete the images out of it. You can leave the web there if you like, calling it Thumbnail or something similar so you can go back and use it again later...

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/1/2002 18:02:01)

Thanks much Bobby, appreciate your help and guidance greatly!! lol, now I' ll have to let you know how I make out[:D]

garry -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/1/2002 19:42:27)

Hi C1

With irfanview try a batch conversion for a " batch" of your thumbnails.
This enables extra paramaters for the graphic including size, color, & the all important " sharpen" at the end. FILE>BATCH CONVERSION.
You can get hundreds of images at a time all thumbed to the same size.

As Bobby you mentioned, thumbnails in FP are easy.....it just depends if you are going to actually link them to the original image, wether this is the way for you to go.

Not too sure about saving as html though.

erinatkins -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 8:06:05)

C1sissy,

Frontpage 2002 does a nice job with pictures. I used on this site http://sk8america.com/hamptonpictures.htm . It did d a nice job.

I also have used the irfanview to change names & resize. I have not had any problems with either.

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 9:40:10)

Erin:
Nice site!! I can dream, lol.
Like I said as far as irnfview is concerned I' m sure that it is something That I have done wrong.

I found a program called easy thumbs, now I just have to wade my way around in it. I did some work in there this morning, but.... Your thumbs definatly look better. Is there a standard size for a thumb?

erinatkins -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 11:27:45)

C1sissy,

They can vary some. I am glad you like the site. I originally had a problem with the menu but I had some help from here to get it straight. [:D][:D]

I am at the skating rink often with Cassandra because she skates competitively.

The thumb nails will come - be patient.

Do you have 2002?

Erin

bobby -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 11:29:25)

FP 2002 will also allow you to specify a size for your thumbnails, unde tools > page options > thumbnails (I think)

You can set the default settings for thumbnail conversions...

bobby -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 11:39:21)

Erin -

That is a nice looking site, I really liked the graphic and colors in the header and footer...

I did get a LR scrollbar at 800 x 600 (I' m one of those that has yet to convince myself to go to 1024 res...)

But it looks really good!
[:D]

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 13:29:22)

Erin:
yes I have 2002. And....Unfortunately[:D][:D] I can be an impatient person when learning something, espically when I can' t seem to grasp that which seems so obvious.

bobby -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 13:41:09)

LOL!

I' m the same way.

If I can' t grasp a new concept right away I figure it' s not me... it' s them, right?

[:D]

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/2/2002 20:28:23)

[:D][:D]
Actually, I think it is me!! I think, what am I missing here that has to be so simple that I' m just overlooking it.

I did that with a few fp lessons. I almost emailed in here, found out what I did wrong, and was sooo glad that I didn' t email in here.[:D][:D]

It was just a matter of me overlooking a step, so what I did was use an index card to go down the page with so that I wouldn' t over look soemthing.

I feel that I should be able to grasp it right away. And I who never turned on a computer until feb of 01. And I still think that I should be able to learn it all asap[:D]

erinatkins -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/3/2002 8:11:29)

C1sissy,

You have been doing great. There is no stupid question.

I know I have on occasion worked really hard on something - Can not do something or find the answer - then post here - and get an easy reply. On occasion I have felt I must have been brian dead at the time because the answer was right there & I missed it. Other times I find out it is not an easy thing.

However the people here are great. I have never felt I wasted a post. (unless you count the night we reached a pinnacle number on the ignore this post - but that was just fun)

Keep posting & someone will normally answer.

Erin

I know that Mhaircaish uses this one when he' s working with Windows machines, and won' t touch anything else.

Don' t know what he uses when he' s using Linux ' though.

Gorilla:
Thanks I did find that one. And I did use it! I works great. The only thing that I noticed is that my thumbs aren' t a square size or all the same size. Does this have something to do with when I crop the picture? Am I not setting something correctly?

I like how this program works. I can put all the pictures in the same folder that I want thumbed and do it all at one time. Works in a matter of seconds.

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/3/2002 9:55:02)

Erin:
Thanks for the moral booster. Your terrific. You have been a tremendous amount of help!!

One thing I don' t do is give up. [:D][:D][:D] Someitmes I might feel like it, but I don' t like being beat!!

And you definately aren' t brain dead.

I' m totaly thrilled that I found this place. I love the humor going around in here. And the way that everyone helps each other out. This forum has a very good foundation. Some of the threads that I have followed with humor are totally funny.

It' s just about impossible to have thumbnails the same size when the originals are not. If resizing isn' t " constrained" the pics will become distorted.

I' m not familiar with the program you use but when using a thumbnail generator, I set one dimension as the maximum width or heigth, while keeping constrained selected. Depending on how vastly different the size of each original though, this can cause thumbnails to become pixellated parituclarly if a small pix needs to be proportionally " enlarged."

Because I' m into photography, I typically create hundreds of thumbnails (or reduced sizes of pics) a year. I actually can use 4-5 different programs to get what I need done. Purists will tell you, and rightfully so, that to get the best thumbnails make them one at a time. But boy is that time consuming. If you need to optimize and photo enhance photos which will be made into thumbnails, the proper sequence of each procedure becomes important.

bobby -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/3/2002 11:07:29)

Re: perfect square thumbnails...

The thumbnails are going to be a " scaled down" version of the original, so they will only be a square if the original is...

For example, a 600 x 600 .jpg will be a perfect square in thumbnail (at say 100 x 100)

but a 640 x 480 .jpg will be 100 x 75 when scaled down... because the width and height dimensions shrink proportionally...

If you tried to make that same image a perfect 100 x 100 square it would look distorted, stretched... because the height hadn' t been resized to the same scale as the width...

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/3/2002 11:38:25)

Gail and Bobby:

Seems as though there is quite a bit of doing for a thmbnail to get it to look good. Looking good is important to me so I want to do this the correct way.

I used the easy thumbs, I also have 2020 that I was just reading how to do the thumbs on.

I don' t recall the setting constrained in the easy thumbs, but I' ll go back and look to see if it is in there and if it is checked by default.

The thumbs look good, color etc.... As I did my croping I did all the editing photo wise that needed to be done. I know when doing a picture for the web that you need to make sure that constrained is selected if I' m remembering correctly. Iee, so much to learn.[:D][:D][:D]

Well off I go to constrain!!!

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program?/Photoshop (8/3/2002 20:49:53)

Ok, now I have been looking at these thumb programs, and duh hits,

If I go into photoshop and resize, am I basically making a thumbnail? I was playing around with it tonight. Just not sure if you do this if it is considered a thumbnail. Plus you can do the constrant thingie in there that I can' t seem to find in the other programs. Plus since as Gail says each photo needs to be done properly to get it to look right, wouldn' t photoshop be the best way to do this? yawn, tired here from figure ing this out!!!

c1sissy,

I didn' t mean to imply that you should only use a good photo editing program such a photoshop to make thumbnails. I just completed a job where I made almost 200 thumbnails www.bellaumbrella.com (click on a category link to see a thumbnail page).

This was a particularly challenging project, the main one' s relating to the way I resized photos: time pressures to get the job done; the extremely intricate detail of the umbrellas; photo and thumbnail size requirements by the client.

Particularly because of the time essence, I used a thumbnail generator. I have several programs which generate thumbnails. I believe I may have used FilmFactory' s. Some programs have automated processes to generate photo galleries for websites. When I use this process, I just take the thumbnails out of the image folders.

I think the quality of the thumbnails at this site is acceptable but could have been even better if I did each individually. The enlarged photos were also resized through a batch process.

btw, all the photos in the site were sharpened and adjusted for contrast and brightness one at a time in a photo editing program after resizing.

Hope this helps, gail

c1sissy -> RE: a good freeware thumbnail program? (8/4/2002 12:10:29)

Gail, that site is totally awsome!!!

I used harms tile to create a backround, lol but.....I don' t know how to insert it into the site that I' m working on for this course. lol. slightly embarassed here as well!

The course I' m taking started out great for an online course, however, the instructor tends not to answer questions lately. So it is basically figure it out for yourself. which can be good.

I think that I solved,for now that is, my thumb delima, I reinstalled Ulead Photo Explorer, which has a thumb generator in it. So I now have some thumbs to work with. whewww. Now finish up the last few assignments so that I can finish up this course. I might even get brave and load it temporaily to have it critiqued. lol.

Thanks for all your help, the reason I figured photoshop was because I was playing around with resizing photos in there. So I figured since resizing in there, maybe that would have been the way to do it. One good thing, the more you play the more you learn!![:D][:D][:D][:D]
