Which Server? Advice please - 8/2/2002 7:35:43
I am after advice on which O/S and Server S/W to use for an Intranet site which will expect aprox 30 concurrent users logged in and consists mainly of ASP pages connecting to various Oracle databases. It is currently on a 98 machine running PWS - I have looked into 2000 pro and IIS but have had a lot of problems (you may have seen an earlier thread regarding this ) I have also noticed that IIS can only cope with 10 users max. Note: When I say an Intranet site - it is actually 3 seperate ' applications' (with the possibility of more in the future) that are set up in 3 seperate Virtual Directories Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Cheers, Reesy

First, I am a Unix/linux fan and do not use WIN/IIS except for client servers running Intranets/Extranets - But, I think the WIN2K Advanced Server/IIS5 platform is the logical choice for this application. I have no idea where you got the idea IIS can only handle 10 users?, that' s ridiculous! Also, you say you have been running WIN98? & are looking at WIN2K PRO? - those are not server OS' s. The servers are NT4 Server or W2K Server or Advanced Server. Attemping to run a Workstation as a server is trying to use the wrong tool for the job and will never work as it should.

Note IIS has a 10-connection limit. The Unlimited option is not available. Are you sure that' s not IIS running on a Workstation? Like W2K or XP?

Windows NT had a similar restriction: the " Workstation" version allowed only 10 connections, but the " Server" version was not limited. I believe the same is true for certain versions of the Windows 2000 and Windows XP products. At this time, I do not think either the Pro or Home edition of Windows XP supports more than 10 connections. If you are deploying to a larger audience, you need to use Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server. These do not have the 10 connection limit. Note that the pricing for the " Server" versions is much higher than the " Desktop" versions.

Yes, the 10 connection limit is hardcoded into IIS on W2K Pro and XP Pro (and in PWS on NT4 Workstation, and I thought on PWS on W9x too). In IIS on any of these WS systems, you can use the IIS service manager and think you are changing the setting for max connections, but the setting is ignored and 10 connections is all she wrote.

Yep, the 10 connection limit has always been there for a " Workstation" , but Reesy asked about a " Server" - or at least that' s the way I read it. Didn' t think there was a limit for WIN2k Server.

Didn' t think there was a limit for WIN2k Server. You are correct, there is no HTTP connection limit for IIS on NT/W2K server unless the sysadmin sets one.
