Text-To-Speech Conversion Software - 8/2/2002 15:50:06
Hi everyone,

If you read my post " translate for greater accessibility" then you will know that my site has a resource directory in Spanish because we want our site to be accessible to more people.

http://www.frc.merced.k12.ca.us/frcweb

Our next step is to convert the text into speech for those that can' t read well or are blind or can' t see too well. I' ve been researching AT&T' s Natural Voices Text-To-Speech Software and I was wondering if anybody was familiar with this software.

If you are familiar with this software please share some information with me. Any information that may help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, UCS.

The main project I do at my work is www.literacyaccessonline.com and we need to make things accessible especially text-to-speech wise because a lot of the kids at whom our site is aimed don' t read independently and need things read to them.

What I have found as far as users with vision problems go, is that they generally have their own software (JAWS or Window-Eyes are two of the most common). There are various free screenreaders out there but remember that you get what you pay for.

Text to speech is quite often left to the user. He/She will have his/her own software and will certainly have a better idea of his/her own needs. That is not to say that you don' t need to do anything for them. Websites can be made very accessible and very screenreader friendly if the effort is made (e.g., adding skip navigation links, setting the tab order, etc); it takes some time and a lot of thought but it is very doable. Check out www.webaim.org for more about accessibility. They have a listserv (forum) about accesibility issues. Good luck with your stuff.

Tony
