Webwork -> BusinessDirectory.com et al - proof of concept (8/9/2002 20:20:01)

I' ve been working on a little project since 1999 and I' d appreciate your input on certain " grand scheme issues" . To make the issues simpler I will break them down into digestible IssueMcNuggets.

Take a look at the bottom of the home page of www.BusinessDirectory.com , one of my sites in development.

Here' s IssueMcNugget #1: Do I place a significant number of the directory names at the bottom of the home page? (I own more). OR.... Do I place far fewer (boffo names only?) with a link to " the complete list" of directories at another location?

How would YOU go about presenting the network member site names?

I own all the names you see at the bottom of BDir (and many, many more) and yes, I' ve managed to go darn near broke since 1999 building this little dot com dictionary. More details about what I' m up to can be found at www.EBusinessStrategy.com.

So, Issue #1 is about " how to best present and integrate" information about the network of sites on any given network member site. It is likely that whatever format I adopt will appear across all directory sites.

If anybody " wows" me be advised that I will require your address so that I can feed you, at say, the Olive Garden? Limit 1 wowing per IssueMcNugget.

In the absence of wows I will buy cheesesteaks for people who cause significant flutters.

Thanks

Arrrggghhh.

The link to www.EBusinessStrategy.com linked to my domain name holding company splash page www.Holdings.net . Must result from the period at the end of the link.

http://www.EBusinessStrategy.com

This is an inauspicious start.

The Holdings.net splash pages explain " what' s up" about names since I get so many inquiries about the names that I own.

Jeff, I have some interest in directories, let me make a few points.

If each and every domain represents an entry point to a user and if I' ve clicked onto --Business Directory.com-- searching for some ' morsel' of business info....then, all these other domains are extraneous, distracting and should not be there. If you insist on trying to ' lure' me to some other site, then at most it should be some minor clickable phrase at the bottom of the page. Sort of a - check out this other ' delicious' site-. I can' t imagine it taking up more space than that empty blue square.

A bigger issue is how to avoid the ' empty plate' syndrome. I see it all across the web...directories with no content. No business is willing to pay to be listed in a directory that hasn' t enough content to attract users. How are you dealing with this problem?

A site of this scope require a ' substantial back-end' , database driven.....not just a demo site. You' ll need scalable functionality -before- the first business is listed. Are you there yet? An October launch date is ambitious.

I would suggest just using http://xcent.com/products/XcDirectory.htm .
