Dbase Connection Confusion - 3/12/2001 17:52:00
I refuse to give up on FrontPage until I get this and I hoping someone out there can help.

I am trying to get a simple form going with results sent to the oh so seductively easy looking data base option. The test url is in a subweb called http://lighttravels.com/tocratejoy

I have followed all the instructions I can get in several manuals, the microsoft site and what from my web host.

WebHosting sets up something called a dsn entry and the path to my data base repatterning.mdb file. They tell me I have to make sure it is in my web. Unfortunately, I don't really know where that goes. Intially with tech support I was inserting this in the html view of the global.asa file. Uhhhh that didn't work and I took it out. The server people said it was a web development issue and they could not help me. I then fiddled in Control panel/OBDC drivers...well hope I didn't irretrievalby ruin anything there...but still does not work.

Now I discovered that in page view - File /properties/custom...has an option for http -equiv system variables. Its above the box where meta tags get inserted.

Am I right in thinking that this is where the dsn name goes? I selected add and where it asked for name i put dsn and for value put the term they gave me lighttra.

I am having a publishing problem at the moment as well so I can't tell if it works.

Does anyone know if this is where the server information goes?

very appreciative.

Place database repatterning.mdb in the recommended place.

The DSN is only accessed by opening web live with Frontpage and doing tools > web settings > verify database . Can you do this and does it verify?

I am by no means an expert-- just having fun with FP but I have had good results using a "DSN-LESS" connection by first copying the database then doing a past into FP2000-- it creates all the connections for you, I usually use Microsoft PWS to test locally. But you need to be able to use FP2000 to publish. I am not sure of all the up or downsides of doing this but it doesn't require you to keep asking your service provider to create DSNs for you. Here are a couple of articles that might be worth looking at http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/070399-1.shtml

Good luck

Thanks Dabney7,

That sounds like something I'd try in the future.

For now I am happy to announce that Spooky got me going in the right direction last night and it now works!

I have a disk based web and I was only publishing my site using file/publish. This method published the namedfile.mdb but did not actually place it in the fpdb file. Also the verification of the data base connection, while verified on my hard drive copy lost the verification when published in this manner.

To solve the problem Spooky suggested: ( and please correct me if I am wrong)

publish by doing it live - i.e.

connect to internet
open frontpage
then file/open web/select folder/select website/ok
now you are in a front page version of your site BUT LIVE

now do file/import/yournameddatabasefile.mdb
make sure it goes into the fpdb file in the root diretory. As a precaution I also made sure a copy went into the subweb fpdb directory where the form collecting page resides.

Then go into Tools/websettings/database/
and make sure the data base is verified.

Also there is a place on the database tab for Advance- I selected it and put the server info for the dsn in the name box and the naming convention assigned by the server in the value box.

AND NOW EVERYTHING WORKS! ITS A MIRACLE!

I have to say that this information is no where to be found in the help menu, my web server set up instructions,Front Page bible, or the 2 other books I have on Front Page or at the microsoft Q&A.

Many thanks to Spooky!
