Picture Gallery - 8/9/2002 23:56:36
what is the best/easiet way to make picture galleries? I know FP2002 has some neat picture gallery tools but are they cross browser compatable or are they like hover buttons? I have heard that netscape doesn' t like the gallerys made with fp2002.

Raj, I' ve used the picture gallery on a site and it did well in NS 6.2 and Opera 6.01. The only thing I' ve noticed with NS is that sometimes it renders the page with a horizontal scroll, sometimes not. They always look good in Opera and of course IE. I know this is a bad attitude to take but I' ve quit trying to get everything to work perfect in NS. It' s not worth it for what I do and for the number of NS users around. (Sorry folks, but I' m not in this to make money right now.) Dave

ORIGINAL: Rajman1138 The thing that appealed to me in useng the FP gallery is that I can select like 20 pics and insert them into a gallery in one step insted of inserting each pic by hand. I' ve used it and find it very useful. eg. http://www.gtbconsulting.com/camera/composition.htm Extremely easy (!) to add new pix or delete old ones and to reorder them;; also a snap to resize all tumbnails, change to one of the other layouts, select different text attributes, change # of pix in a row; add titles and descriptions. May not be suitable for every type of gallery, but I love it when it is. Works well and looks pretty good in current versions of NN too. gail

I' ve been using the Gallery for awhile and it' s OK. Not great but OK. I have been looking for several years (would you believe 4?) for some effective way to manage large numbers of photos and to date the Gallery in FP is, to me at least, the easiest I' ve found. I tried several share wares, ULead PhotoImpact' s and one or two others and found that each had at least several major annoyances. One of my sites uses 28 separate galleries for displaying several hundred photos. The biggest issue I have with the feature concerns the way it keeps track of changes. When you first create a gallery, FP creates a folder called photogallery with a subfolder containing the photos and some other things required to make it all work... good enough so far. However, when you decide to change the gallery (and I confess I' ve not tried to dig into the " rules" behind this), FP will create a new subfolder which now contains everything all over again. If you have just a few galleries, no big deal. If you do much editing, adding, deleting, etc. the photogallery folder can get out of hand in a hurry. My 29 folders now have 47 folders in photogallery! In addition, FP uses a folder numbering system that I' ve yet to fathom so going back and deleting " old" unused folders is problematic at best and tedious and time consuming at worst. That is assuming that the whole kit and kaboodle doesn' t blow up on you if you delete the wrong folder. I' m not sure what will happen if you delete an old folder...I' ve been afraid to try. Notwithstanding this " feature" the Gallery allows me the ability to keep reasonable track of some rather large collections (one gallery has around 75-80 pictures) without too much difficulty. I have noticed also, that trying to reset the default fonts for captions, etc. doesn' t work very well. You have to keep changing it back if you don' t like it' s defaults, but this may also have something to do with themes. Again, it' s not perfect, but it gets the job done. It' s just a little trashy around the edges.

When I purchased my Olympus dig cam it came with photo software that does a pretty good job of creating HTML Gallery' s. You will need to update to their pro version to enable that feature. You need to revise the name of the files it creates to suit your web site and when you do that you will have to revise the links it creates also. I use the find and replace feature in FP 2000 for that. The program creates thumbnails and larger photos that display when you click on the thumbnail.
