Custom 404 error on NT server - 8/10/2002 7:40:15
There must be a way to do this on NT?!.....Any help greatly appreciated!! I' ve contacted and recontacted our host - and they are telling me that " At this time custom error pages are not supported in the shared web-hosting environment on the Windows platform. Custom error pages are supported on the Unix platform since Unix supports the modifications of .htaccess files." What I really want is for the user to be automatically redirected to our homepage whenever they encounter a 404 error. Our old host did this for us in a shared web, NT environment....so I know it' s possible. I' m concerned about this, as we have high rankings for several pages on our site- but I' ve recently redesigned and want to add features that may require me to change the path to these pages. Please help! Is there a way to accomplish this... or should I just switch to Unix? Much Thanks, Laurie

If the host says " No" n NT there' s nothing you can do about it. Do oyu need NT or is Unix OK?

Must be your host decided not to offer custom error pages. On my local NT4 server it' s a matter of opening the IIS service manager, opening the property page of the website, and clicking the Custom Errors tab. Ditto on W2K server.

Well, I signed up for NT hosting with Ameritech, because I thought I needed NT in order to accomplish our sites goals- mainly; Access database support, Login/Password Protect function. I was planning on using Spooky' s Login - as it had all the features I wanted- but it doesn' t run on Unix. Do you know of a similar program that uses cookies? Also, I have a " Rep Lookup" database, built in MS Access, that I wanted to put on. Can I convert this to another db program that runs on Unix? Thanks again! Laurie

If you don' t want to go through some kind of Unix conversion, there are MS hosts that do provide what you need. My host provides me a control panel where I can control custom error pages for my own site without bothering their support. W2K servers, SQL Server available, reasonable prices (not cheap tho). www.crystaltech.com ps - I don' t have any affiliation with them, I' ve hosted with them since 1999 and I' m completely happy with their services.

Thanks! I' ll check them out. I don' t mind switching hosts, although I' ll have to review our contract to see if can easily get out! I wish I would have thought to ask about Custom Errors before I went with Ameritech, but I figured it was a no brainer! Laurie

...Oh, it gets better! They signed us up on a 12 month contract for $99/month(2 months free) - and I found out by visiting their site that they' ve dropped that plan to $54.95/month. Think they contacted us about that? No way! I believe the relatively same plan at Crystaltech is about 1/4 of what we are spending. Time to switch!

MMM I wouldn' t hesitate if I was you...it is so unfortunately that Windows Based servers are so expensive...that lower price ($54) is double what I charge for my largest plan....however I have seen some Windows Based Hosting Companies change $75/month for thier basic account and then it gets even worse the further it goes up..... Good luck!!

I' ve switched over to Crystaltech and am very pleased! Besides an initial screwup on their part regarding our mail server, their tech support has been very helpful and I love the fact that I can go in and make changes to the setup of our account(DNS, file properties, custom errors, etc) WITHOUT having to wait for someone else to do it. And of course, I' m thrilled to be paying about 1/4 of what Ameritech origianally signed us up for. I only wish I would have known about Crystaltech to start with. It would have saved a lot of headaches and money. Laurie
