Turning off the Preview Pane in Outlook/Espress - 8/10/2002 19:51:48
In some versions of Outlook it' s simply toggling the Preview Pane window: View > Preview Pane. In some versions of Outlook Express it' s: View > Layout > Uncheck " Show preview pane." In the opinion of many, turning off the preview pane window may reduce your chances of catching computer viruses since email will no longer be opened automatically via the Preview Pane. gail

Always seems to work for me. I have about twenty to fifty Klez messages come in every week, plus about sixty or so other apparently infected messages, and have not automatically contracted a single instance of a virus since I disabled the Preview Pane six months ago. Plus, Outlook runs faster! This won' t protect you, though, if you go ahead and open the messages manually.

Folks, Don' t become complacent regarding keeping your anti-virus definitions up to date. I recommend setting your anti-virus program to: - Update definitions at least daily.
- Set it to scan incoming AND
- Set it to scan outgoing e-mail messages.
E-mail messages are not executable files and the " preview" does not cause execution of viruses. The problem occurs when defintions are out of date and the curious reader opens the attachment which may be executable. Also be aware, most viruses arrive from friends, aquaintences, and business associates that didn' t have adequate anti-virus protection on their computers.

I read recently there are some exploits that can be initiated by the preview window only if your outlook isn' t up to date. It' s important to keep your windows updated too. Visit the MS windowsupdate site regularly and keep up with critical updates. I would keep the preview pane off, although if your virus defs are current and your windows is current you are at low risk.

Here' s a quote from AVA AntiVirus which relates to the preview pane. As others have mentioned, this is only one of many steps to take to help protect against computer viruses. quote:
The I-Worm/Klez.H virus is spreading in e-mails with one or two attachments. The first one is the actual virus, the second can be a randomly chosen file from infected computer. The virus exploits a security hole (IFRAME exploit), by which it can be activated on some systems just by previewing the infected message. emphasis mine ref: http://www.grisoft.com/html/news/klezh.htm?session=fab844a8b9223ee13e0ebfd6cf764eb2 gail
