Invisible hit counter - 8/13/2002 10:37:37
Any current thoughts or suggestions about using an invisible hit counter? I know nothing about it but have a request to place one on a site. Any recommendations: pro or con? Are they difficult to set up?
I did a search here but would like a bit more info that what I found.

I used to use invisible hit counters when I sold stuff on eBay. It is a nice way to see how many people are looking at your stuff w/o everyone else knowing how popular (or unpopular) your stuff is. Here is where I got my counters: www.andale.com. They have a feature where you can get the code for a counter to put on any web page. (At least they used to -- haven' t checked lately.) Jayn

The transparent gif as a custom pic in the Hit Counter properties dialog works quite well.

If you want a hit counter that no one else can see, why don' t you go a step further and get full stats.
I use this and it provides more than I need http://www.mrunix.net/webalizer/

Hi,
Depends on what your customer wants. If they want someone to see, read browser, how many people have come to a page I would recommend the invisible GIF with the FP counter.
If they want to view stats for their site I would recommend getting to the raw log files off of the server. This might make for a revenue generator for you. Provide a monthly report of their traffic ;). I use Mach5 FastStats. I hear Webtrends is pretty intense also :).
Either way I would like to try an defer you from using a third party solution where you place some code/snippet that points to their server (third party). During heavy usage hours it would actually slow down the page load while it keeps trying to contact the third party server.

Thanks, Reflect. The host does provide stats so that' s not a problem. They are actually generated by Webalizer. Think in this particular instance, for page-specific hits, the trans.gif is the way to go.
