linking from one web to another - 8/13/2002 20:26:11
Hi ya' ll. I manage an Intranet that has five webs on the same IIS machine. What I am trying to do is create hyperlinks on each webs home page to the other webs home pages, but can not get the thing to work. I highlight the word for the link, right click, choose hyperlink, then ok. I test it and get the custom made 404 page that I made. I tried entering the absoulte url for the link. No cigar. Any advise would be very greatful!

Also, how does the new login window/script work for this fourm? I would like to incorparate it into our Intranet.

Thanks, Ya' ll !!!!!!!

Do you have the network permissions to view the other intranets? ie can you view them separately through your browser OK.. if not, then I' d suggest you contact your network administrator.

He, he, he............. I am the administrator. Yes, I can view the other webs by typing in their addresses (http://........), just having trouble getting any of them to link into each other. I get page not found. All links within each web works fine. For the sake of not going bald, I refuse to us FrontPage Extentions, so we can rule them out. Kind of got me boggled down with this one. Thanks for the advise! I won' t laughing at you, just my situation!!

also you might try adding the link with the insert menu at the top instead of with the right click--just a thought

[:p] Sorry for the delay in response folks. Been out-of-town. Anyway, yep, tried entering the path by hand and tried using the insert - hyperlink. Cleared cashe / refreash page. Notta good. Now, let me sound foolish here for a minute. I did a test intranet on this server before all this showed up. Under the test, which I still have, but is stopped, I started with one main web, then nest all the departments under it. The " departments" under the main web shows up as opened boxes. The links to and from each other work. Then I read that if I might need better security later on, that I should not nest, but rather make each department it' s own web. So I did that by creating webs for each, giving each department it' s own ip. Looks like folders now. No open boxes. Sounding mighty green here huh!!! And I guess that i should add that I am doing this on Windows 2000 Server / IIS 5.0. I know the answer has got to be something simple, but I don' t have the time to research it right now because we are in a big roll-out. Any hand holding would be great!!!

how are you resolving the names? all ###.###.###.###' s need to get translated into names somehow.

Thanks for helping caywind. Ip is resolved into names via DNC/WINS. I sat down today with another Network Admin to see if they saw anything on the network side that looked funky. Looked o.k. to them too. Went back and looked at my Test Intranet that had worked linking site to site. It is set-up as one Web {folder} with the departments nest {virtual directories} under it. If I enable it: works fine. Got to be something about having several webs that are not nested in anyway that is keeping me from hyperlinking between them.
