Going beyond basic query pages with DRW - 3/15/2001 20:49:00
I've successfully developed some useful query pages with DRW, served by my Win98 PC running PWS 4.0 and connecting to an SQL Server database on an NT server.

I now need to look at more sophisticated pages which allow updating, user authentication, sorting, formulae between fields and the rest. In other words, much more of an application than simple queries.

My question is, from your experience will I be able to do this by extending what I've done up to now, i.e. reading these forums and other Web resources, copying code snippets and generally achieving the desired results without understanding all the code?

I've kinda been assuming I need to learn ASP and VBScript "properly" for this project. I'm also thinking we need to host on a new Win2K server with IIS5 instead of my current setup.

Am I going beyond the "hack the FP DRW" realms here, or can I continue in the same way with some guarantee of success?

Any opinions appreciated. I can cope with hacking the gray code and have done some programming but not VBScript or ASP.

Thanks

Mark

I'd say bite the bullet and learn the scripting. If you already know one language you won't have that difficult of a time picking this stuff up(Especially if the language you already know is VB). There are a multitude of good tutorials just do a search on Yahoo for ASP or VBScripting tutorials and dig in.

Thanks both for your replies. I've got more time than I first thought to do this, so I guess the "self-teach ASP" route is the one for me.

Is it better to write an ASP page from scratch or still use the DRW as a starting point?

I personally prefer to write my own code. This way you can connect to your database without a dsn and you have so much more control.
