Keyword meta names - 8/20/2002 10:34:17

Regarding the use of Keywords, I' ve seen it both ways:

Some web designers insert commas between keywords, others do not. I' ve also seen sites which include what seems to be an endless list keywords and phrases; others sites enter only a few?

With regard to each approach, is one preferable over another? If so, why?

thanks, gail

Hi _Gail,

I am one of the " No comma" people. I was taught that way and my serps have always placed high, so I did not question. However I can not offer a logical " why" .

On the never ending list of keywords...

Keep in mind content on page is the main key here...no pun intended. basically you only want to insert the relevant keywords for that page ONLY. I retro mine here. I have my content writer who is very versed on structuring. I then remove all stop words from their copy. I then remove any " NON" words (what the heck is a " non word" ). A non word (as I jokingly call it) is a word that is not on " theme" with the thought for that page. What I am left with is a short list of words. I then take those words and hit Oveture (among a few) and analyze them to see which is the most popular search word. I then use these for my META keywords tag.

I see a lot of sites that do what you mentioned...have a looooong list of keywords. I always wondered what the effect would be.

I would like to take it a step further. I used tiers of keywords. I take the most targeted and generic (for my theme) keywords and use them on my top level pages. I then take a more drilled down or " focused" approach on sub pages. These support the 1st set of keywords but get much more specific. Fewer hits on these pages from the serps but they are very targeted traffic with a higher conversion rate.

Sorry to ramble,

Brian

I take a different approach...

(and I use commas but couldn' t tell you why - it' s how I learned and I' ve always done it that way...)

For keywords I make up a list, check it twice, decide which are naughty and which are nice... :)

Actually I use keywords that are generally repeated in the page content... the most specific and relevant words... then I copy the same keywords onto every page of the site... or build each page from a template that has the keywords already in place.

I will usually only remove keywords or change them if the page is very specific, or if it' s a non-indexed page or something like that.

In most cases I try to keep the keywords under 20... but that' s because I' m lazy :)

I' ve built one site in particular that had over 100 (client supplied) - some marketing groups don' t care how " correct" it is, as long as they can show their boss how creative they were and how many ideas they came up with... [:j]

First order of keyword phrases should come from your title, then description, and then your first two paragraphs on the page. If you are going to use the keywords tag, it should not contain any words that do not appear on that page.

If you are building your site around a theme, then most likely one or more of your keywords may appear on multiple pages of the site and therefore will be contained in that keyword tag for those pages where it appears.
