disable the right button menu - 8/23/2002 13:47:26
I am looking for the code used to diable the right hand button menu. This is the menu that appears when you click on an image with the right button, one of the options is " save picture as" . I recently completed a site for a photographer, he would like to disable this menu if possible. I have seen it done, but don' t know how. Any suggestions?

It " can: be done - But in no way stops anyone from copying images! Your photographer needs to understand that the only way prevent copying of his work is to not have it on the WWW - period! Also, disabling someones right mouse functionality (Back, Create Shortcut, Add to Favorites and Print for a few) is really rude and irritating to most of us.

Another way to do it is to make them flash movies. It doesn' t elminate the problem but it makes it a little harder.

I would recommend going to the search feature and searching for " right click" and checking out the posts. You really don' t stand a chance of protecting what is posted to the web.

There are many such scripts available. While I think it' s important to say that I agree with what everyone else in the thread has said on the subject (I' ve never used this feature), if you want to implement it there are several scripts available. You can find three such scripts at: http://developer.irt.org/script/969.htm If you do a general web search for " disable right click" you' ll find more.

Hi, I' m at work, no bookmark/favorites. There are scripts that will allow you to remove certain aspects of the right click menu. I came up empty on my searches just now but I klnow I have seen this. Also digimarc spider is a really neat one. It costs but you can " track" your images. They also ofer a slew of other image protection services from watermarks to the spider. http://www.digimarc.com/products.htm A client I steared to the spider was totaly thrilled with it. Brian

Thank all of you for your replies. It is my intention to prevent casual reuse of his images, a hacker can always find a way to copy data. Anyone with the inclination and ability to do actual work can always generate their own images, but amateurs may take unfair advantage of totally unsecured data. There are too many irritating gimmicks on the internet these days without my adding to the problems. This posting certainly turned out a fine inventory of opinion on the advisability of implementing this trick. Thanks again for all the feedback, I will certainly reconsider this tactic.
