RE: Outfronts Page Tools?? - 4/17/2001 20:44:00
Dear Robert,I am assuming that you've tried to use the Template Copier on a web site that already has content. In which case, yes, all of the pages would be overwritten in favor of the new template. There is in fact a warning to that affect right on the Template Copier dialog box. The idea behind the tool is simple. Setup a new site. Create a navigation structure. FrontPage will automatically create blank HTML files for you. You can use File > New > Page and choose a FrontPage template, or use a custom template to create a look for your site. The template should include all of the common elements that you will be using throughout the entire project. For example, when I was working on my site (www.ltmod.com), I setup a JavaScript navigation menu, setup all of the tables, CSS styles, Navigation Bars, etc. on a page I called "temp.htm". I saved the temp.htm page to my site. I tested it in Netscape and IE to assure compatibility. Then using Template Copier, I selected "temp.htm" as the source (under "Select Template File"), and added all 638 pages that my site makes up under the "File List". When I clicked Apply, all of the pages took on the same characteristics as defined by temp.htm. I basically saved myself a copy / paste route of astronomical proportions. I then proceeded to add content to each page. Now if you are working on a site that already has content, my advice would be to create a disk based backup first. Then setup your template, and use Template Copier to modify all of the pages on the live site. You could then go page by page and copy and paste the content itself from the backup to the live site. I've worked that way as well. It's still a lot faster. And finally, PageTools will only recognize files that are part of your site. So you could not select a FrontPage template from within the Template Copier. This is actually done with good intent. I've seen lots of FrontPage and 3rd Party templates use absolute references to graphics, and there are always tweaks to be made. And still, until the FP template is saved to your site, all of the graphics for it are generally sitting on your hard drive. That's nothing that you want copied to all pages within your site. Feel free to e-mail me anytime. I've been working with FrontPage since before it was a Microsoft product (when the oldest animals were puppies). I'll be happy to get you "on the right track". I re-read the help files and this is what I did but it still does not work. I opened FP2k and clicked file > new> and picked a template that is in there. I than saved saved it as a template file for that web. When I reopened and clicked on the page tools button it does NOT give me the option of selecting that template it only gives me the option of picking pages within the web. I did pick one of the pages and that's when it over-wrote everything?? I need some serious help (and not just with this :-) )Thanks to anyone that can get me on the right tract. I just rebuilt a 123 page site and cut and pasted every single page onto the new template and I don't want to ever have to do that again!!!! Thanks Robert
