MS Access update error - 8/23/2002 23:14:30
I have run in a problem with updating an Access table using an ASP page, that was created using ASPMaker. The pages work fine, until I try to add/update a record. I get the following messages:

quote:

HTTP 500.100 - Internal Server Error - ASP error
Internet Information Services

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical Information (for support personnel)

Error Type:
Microsoft JET Database Engine (0x80040E09)
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.
/albany/maint/Committee_Membersedit.asp, line 80

Browser Type:
mozilla/4.0 (compatible; msie 6.0b; Windows NT 5.0; .NET CLR 1.0.2914)

Page:
POST 91 bytes to /albany/maint/Committee_Membersedit.asp

POST Data:
a=U&key=2&x_Committee_Name=EMS&x_Member_Name=Detra%2C+Virginia&x_Chairperson=No&Action=EDIT

What has me confused is why it thinks that it is read-only. Can someone point me into the right direction along with a " little" push. 8-)

Thanks in advance!!

Youll need to ask your host to make the folder read / write.
This isnt normally the default for most folders, so write access is a special permission.
Quite often providers will set up a folder just for this, and you need to store your databases in that folder.

Frontpage sets up the folder /fpdb/ for that and normally the act of importing a database file will activate the correct permissions without the hosts intervention.

Spooky,

Thanks for the reply. I have checked access rights on both machines (my workstation and the ISP) and READ/WRITE is set.

I have also built a small ASP page (ADO_Debug.asp) to display the connection properties. The read only shows false. The site is at http://vil.Albany.wi.us with debug page avaliable there.

Based on this, I am even more puzzled. What else can I do to gather more information to track this down?

UPDATE:
I have since uncovered the problem and resolved it. Even though IIS has the folder marked as READ/WRITE, the underlying NTFS permissions did not allow MODIFY. Once I had my ISP make the change, the scripts started working.

All of the time, I have always heard that all security should be done though the IIS properties page. Well, that just ain' t so!
