Need to let client update a News table on main page. - 8/24/2002 17:44:58
Hi everybody,
I have a client who wants a small area (table) on his home page that he can add News to. I know this must be something that a lot of people want to do, so how do you guys handle that. He doesn' t have FP or the ability to use it if he did have it. I' ve looked at a lot of scripts and most of them seem to be much more than I really need for this. Does anybody know of an easy way to do this? Thanks.

Hi Paula,

I personally have not set this up and can' t endorse it but you might want to check it out and see if it fits your needs (assuming that .asp is OK).

I really have to spend more time there and get a good feel for things.[:j]

Hi Mike,
Thanks, that was a really quick response! That would have been pretty good, but I' m on Unix. I' ve seen several Perl scripts that were similar to this but most are too complicated, both to install and to use. I' ve installed a few scripts, but I' m not good at it, so I need something well documented.

Any other ideas?

Paula, Newspro or Coranto is perfect for this. Unfortunately unless you already have a copy of it you' re out of luck. [:' (]:)

Paula,

I' m sure EWD is quite correct but doing a very quick search on Corranto it seems that you might be able to get one or the other. Check This Link
I didn' t go too far into it but just maybe...

Thanks guys! I' m going to have to study this. It seems pretty complex to me, but then that makes me think about how I might be able to set it up so that he could do even more! ie, We currently have a page for " Show Dates" maybe he could update that himself, too, with this script.

In the mean time, do you have any suggestions for a way he could just change the text in that one table on his home page? Not really news with archiving and the whole deal, just editing from a web based form. The hosting plan he' s on doesn' t allow SQL database, but I could upgrade him if I had to. Surely, I' m not the only one who' s come across this situation.

Thanks again!

I' d really suggest you look into using Coranto or Newspro. Katherine is an expert. I' ve used Newspro a few times and it' s really the perfect solution for you. You don' t have to use the archiving stuff and all the other things. I use it for several clients for exactly what you describe, writing little blurbs in a small table on their home page. Take the plunge - Katherine' s articles on installing CGIs will really help you!

And yes - - if the client can remember a password and can choose from a list of places he can update, they certainly can do " a lot more" !

Thanks EWD! I believe you' ve convinced me to plunge! What can it hurt! Since you' ve used it (and that' s good enough for me!) you must know... is it easy to install? I' ve installed a few scripts, PERL and PHP, but I' m not real good at it.

Plunge away! I labored over it the first time, but I hadn' t ever installed anything before that more challenging than a light bulb!

Any time you install scripts, be mindful to upload in ASCII mode, not binary. And go slowly, following the step by step instructions, and watch your P' s and Q' s ---and CHMOD' s![:p]

EWD,
I plunged!:) I finished installing the scripts and playing with my new toy a few minutes ago. It' s perfect and it was really pretty easy. I can see where it will get a little tricky getting everything just the way I want it, but that' s okay. Thank you, thank you!! You are just the best! And thank you Mike for finding that link!:):):)

That' s great! :) :) :) I love a good success story!

Did you run across all the add-ons? One lets you set it up with multiple categories so you can have him posting to different sections or different pages. (My favorite). Also there' s an HTML builder add on if the client can get the hang of it, they can format their text a bit.* All very cool stuff. :)

(*These are Newspro add-ons)

Which did you install? I haven' t tried Coranto yet myself---I keep falling back to my old familiar Newspro. :)

Hi EWD,
I got the impression that they were the same thing, Coranto and Newspro. I installed Coranto because I didn' t see a download for Newspro, as such. It was just a matter of uploading the scripts and running a setup file, which did everything for you, including filling in all the paths. Just fill in a few blanks and make sure the paths were right and it' s all done. Did the Newspro install that way too? I got the impression that Coranto was just an update of Newspro, but I could be wrong. I did see the addons, but I didn' t take the time to study them yet. The two you mentioned sound like something I could really use. I' ll have to go back and have a look at it. Thanks again for this great suggestion! This is something I know I' ll be using a lot.

Paula,

I' ve been having some problems with getting Coranto to work and was wondering if you ran into any of the issues I am having. I have setup a page called News_Page.shtml which consists of the following code:

<html>
<head>
<meta name=" GENERATOR" content=" Microsoft FrontPage 5.0" >
<meta name=" ProgId" content=" FrontPage.Editor.Document" >
<meta http-equiv=" Content-Type" content=" text/html; charset=windows-1252" >
<title>News Page</title>
</head>

<table border=" 1" cellpadding=" 0" cellspacing=" 0" style=" border-collapse: collapse" bordercolor=" #111111" width=" 100%" >
<tr>
<td width=" 100%" >
<!--webbot bot=" Include" U-Include=" cgi-bin/News/news.txt" TAG=" BODY" startspan --><!--webbot bot=" Include" i-checksum=" 0" endspan --></td>
</tr>
</table>

</body>
</html>

My newsdat.txt and news.txt files are getting updated with my test data, but do not make it to the page. The page reflects a collapsed empty table. Might you, or anyone else, have any ideas on what I might need to do?

I have also tried to include the news.txt using ssi and not using the webbot, but received an error stating:
[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Thanks so much!

Hi WebDude,
It sound like the script is okay, so I think it has to be the SSI (and I don' t know for sure but I think you must use SSI rather than the webbot). That being said, first I would change it back to an SSI call. Then go check your settings in the Administration Control panel of the script. I think it may be something wrong with the " News Files Path" . The script setup does a good job of guessing the right paths, but depending on where you placed your news.txt file, it might have guessed wrong. Did you actually place your news.txt file inside your cgi-bin, or did you place it in the file with the page that contains the SSI call. I' m thinking that " News Files Path" is wrong, one way or another. Not sure, but I think you must have the news.txt file outside of the cgi-bin and in the same directory as the page you want the news to show on. Let me know if this helps. If not, I' ll see if I can come up with anything else.

Well, I moved the news file folder outside of the cgi-bin folder and also placed my shtml page within that folder. Still receiving the " [an error occurred while processing this directive]" error.

I don' t think my paths are wrong because the news.txt file is getting updated when I add/submit news. It' s just not making it into my shtml page for some reason. :)

WebDude,
Sorry, I missed that in your other post. You' re right it sounds like it' s just the SSI. I' m don' t have a clue what the problem could be. Maybe somebody else will have an answer, I hope. You might try here (although I did look around a bit and didn' t see anything, I didn' t have time to do a search):

I' ll look again when I have more time. When you figure it out I' d be interested to know. Could it be a problem with your web server?

Hey Paula...

Up and running (testing). I changed the include to

<!--#include virtual=" news.txt" -->

and BINGO! I have also downloaded the WebWriter addon and find it to be much like this very interface for posting on the board here. It gives you a WYSIWYG interface plus inserting smileys, etc.

I' ve turned it over to the client for testing, so we will see how they like it. Thanks for all of your help on getting this going!

Yeah WebDude! I' m glad to hear you got it going. That was pretty easy, huh? I' m sure your client will like it as much as mine does.

I somehow missed this thread first time around. I wouldn' t class myself as an expert but I have used both Newspro and Coranto and with all the addins that are available it really is possible to tailor a solution for every situation.

I was the same, but I took the plunge - and boy am I glad I did!!

Coranto is a terrific piece of work and makes things that were a little tricky with Newspro, and required fiddling with the actual script pages, easy as pie to do. You really should have a look at it EWD.

I plan to, in fact I have a project I could use it for right now but it' s a windows server with ASP capability but no Perl. (They asked me if I wanted to install it (Perl) but just the thought scared me!) :) I need to be able to let a group of individuals add/modify the text on their own pages.

So now I' m looking for a similar solution to Newspro or Coranto except in ASP. Have been all through Hot Scripts and ashamedly am clueless about ASP so really don' t know what to look for. (Except it must be free - it' s a pro bono job).

If anyone knows of a specific script that would fit the bill I' d appreciate hearing about it! Thanks! :)

Gosh, no, I missed it! Thanks for pointing it out. It' s a great site. Disappointing it' s going to be removed. :) But it sounds like it would be good to try so I will. Thanks again!
