Inserting FrontPage html into email - 8/25/2002 12:20:06
I' m trying to develop an email newsletter to send to our customers. I' ve tried unseccessfully to insert a FrontPage html file into the email. I' ve read several tutorials regarding this process and according to them it should work by selecting insert text file under the tools menu. Can someone help me? Do I need different software? Do I need to reinstall Outlook Express or update it to a newer version? Mary

Here' s a way to approach it if you don' t mind creating your newsletter in MS Word, rather than using a FrontPage html file. It works, though there may be better alternatives. In Outlook 2002 you can select Microsoft Word as your email editor. (If I recall correctly, Outlook 2000 may also have this capability). Tools > Options > Mail Format For message composing format, select HTML Also check " Use MS Word to edit email messages." Then create your newsletter in Word and send right from Word via Outlook to your recipients. You have full access to your address book and any distribution lists you' ve created in Outlook. Once you " send" from Word, hop over to Outlook and send from there. I' ve checked with AOL 7.0 and Yahoo! mail, as well Outlook and the graph cs, text and tables display fine as an html document. gail

One additional thought: In Outlook 2002, you can edit both an email waiting to be sent as well as received email via the Edit menu > Edit message. You can insert graphics, add horizontal rules, change text, background colors, etc. gail PS According to Outlook' s Help files about using Word as an email editor: " In previous versions of Microsoft Outlook, the default e-mail editor was the Outlook editor. You could change the editor to Microsoft Word if you wanted. In this version, the default e-mail editor is Word, so you can take advantage of features such as: " AutoCorrect As you write, automatically correct common typos, such as transposed letters and extra or missing letters. " Automatic spelling and grammar checking Check your spelling and grammar while you work. Misspelled or misused words are underlined and alternatives appear, eliminating the need to check spelling and grammar before you send a message. " Automatic Bullets and Numbering Add bullets and numbering to call out important points. Use a picture or other graphic as a bullet, or create a hierarchical list that has numbered items. " Tables Use tables to organize your information. When you use Word as your e-mail editor and HTML as the default message format, Outlook preserves table formatting, even for recipients who do not use Word. " Conversion of e-mail names and Internet addresses Automatically convert e-mail names and Internet addresses to hyperlinks. Smart hyperlink formatting can even convert hyperlinks whose URLs contain spaces. " Themes Use Word themes to provide visual consistency and to make your messages stand out. " Autoformat Format your message automatically as you type, and add formatting to plain text messages that you receive. "

What I do is create my web page and publish it to the web server. I then go into IE and open my web page...then choose Tools > Mail & News > Send Page. It inserts the page directly into the e-mail. That' s how all the junk-mail advertisements for dell and free credit checks and stuff works. (So it looks like your sending them a " flyer" or ad -- and in your case a newsletter). Hope that helps!

I inserted and sent a web page to AOL 7, it works perfectly; in Outlook, none of the hyperlinks function except mailto; in yahoo, the text and layout was fine but the graphics did not appear in the inserted page. The graphics came only as attachments. Have you found this to be true and, if so, any workarounds? thanks, gail

" Blondy" - I love it. Anyway, I' d be real interested in what you find in your quest. I' m also going to try the process you mentioned earlier about sending your page in IE. I have a client who wants to send brochures through email and I think he was going to use Adobe Acrobat. Your method may look better. Keep us posted, ok?

I found that the graphics and images have to be on a web server and then called into the email source with an absolute reference. I also learned that if you are sending to potentiall non-html email clients, insert your content in the top of the html page inside comment tags. The html email clients will ignore it, and the nonhtml clients will print that part first before the html part. I mak emy emails in FP then in Outlook do tools>options>mail format> stationery picker>new>use this file>browse and select your file. (phew! lots of steps but simple, really). Make sure you set the bg color to FFFFFF. or your color, but must be set. When ready to send do action>new mail message using> and select your template. Hope this helps in some way. I' ve been setting up lots of these lately!

Thanks all for your great ideas. I' ll try them all. I did find a downloadable software called e-Campaign that is simple. It works off a csv mailing list. I haven' t actually worked with the mailing list issue a lot but my main objective was to find software that would import an html page. I do know it won' t send a single email unless it' s the only name on the mailing list. I' m definitely going to try the stationery route through Outlook before I purchase the e-Campaign software.

We send out several hundred copies of email newsletters every month. I format the html in Frontpage as normal, making sure that any graphics are hosted on our server and are referenced using an absolute link (e.g. <img src=" http://www.mysite.com/images/pic1.gif" > Once i have formatted the page to my satisfaction i simply copy the entire page and paste it into Outlook Express V6 (note: if you are using a form on your page you will see a load of hidden form info, but this doesn' t show up on the recipients screen.) This works fine for users reading the e-mail via Outlook Express V4 - 6 or Outlook 2000. AOL 5, 6, or 7 users can see everything except the form part of the message. If you use Outlook 2000 to send the email then you will get problems viewing it on OE 5 or earlier, and AOL users receive a garbled message. CW

Thanks all of you for your great ideas. Colin: your method of copy and paste sounds simple. I' ll try it. I think what I' ll do is go the FP and IE method. It worked pretty slick. Blondy
