Another animal site needs some feedback - 8/25/2002 22:34:46
I posted a question about this site over on " Beginners" this afternoon, but since there seem to be some animal folks hanging around over here...:)

This is a site I' m building for our state humane organization...also a volunteer effort. The index page is not hooked to anything yet, as we are still waiting for all the board members to take a look, and for me to finish tweaking, but you can access the whole site from this page, which will become the index page as soon as we' re ready to go live.

Humane Association of Georgia

Still lots of tweaking to do, so I' ll appreciate any comments.

Kimberly - I think it' s very nice and they' re fortunate to have you volunteering to do this for them. I have two suggestions: A lot of your photos are huge in file size and should really be optimized. I would either break up the longer pages or put links to anchors on the page so you can see as soon as it loads what' s down there.

This is very nice, and I imagine those two items were already on your tweaking list. Nice job... great cause! You should feel good about this one! :):):)

Oh - and I like the list of pdf documents. Does that resolve the problem you posted in beginners?

Thank you for the positive feedback EWD!

I' ve got to find the code to have the .pdf files open in a new window. That' s one tweak.

The main one I' m still struggling with is this: I have one board member who is insisting that every page on the site be printable....not .pdf, mind you, but just printable off the browser. And she wants it to print exactly as it appears on the screen.

I' ve said that I don' t think it' s possible to design so that every viewer can view it and print it exactly the same way. But I' m a beginner, so what do I know?:)

If you have any suggestions about how to maximize the printability in this sense....like always set your tables to " x" width and align them a certain way....I' d be deeply & eternally grateful!

And - I guess I don' t understand what you meant by putting links to anchors on the long pages. Will you talk a little more about this, please?

Thanks!

Kimberly (trying to get good at this)

Kimberly,

Some folks do print web pages. Most do not. Our computer club' s open lab uses a couple of reams of paper each week. This is so that they can take the information home with them. However, the computer club also posts most documents as .pdf http://www.myscacc.org

We do receive questions as to why we use .pdf, but when we throw the term " Portable Document Format" their way, and explain that " portable" refers to readability and printablity using any operating system environment. Adobe Acrobat Reader is FREE.

Also remember, that board member is probably not a majority of the board, unless it is a one person board.

Have the board member read page 4 of this newsletter: http://www.myscacc.org/Newsletters/0207News.pdf
