c1sissy -> asp books and IIS/PWS (8/28/2002 8:13:56)

While on vacation I purchased Sams, Teach Yourself Active Server Pages 3.0 in 21 days

I had scanned this book several times while in B&N along with several other books.

Now, the question that I have is this. You need to have the PWS/IIS installed on your computer. I have done a search and found some things refering to IIS, one thing says IIS6.log. I have also found some things regarding the PWS.

I' m totally confused here, and don' t want to do anything without first consulting with someone who is an expert with all of this.

I have a windows xp computer. I don' t know if this is of any help. It isn' t the professional xp, just plain old xp.

I would really appreciate any help that could be given here. I don' t want to mess anything up while doing this.

During a search for a iis.exe I found the following aspnet_regiis.exe,
Also going to Administrative tools I have Microsoft.Net Framework configuration & Microsoft.net Wizzards.

bobby -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/28/2002 10:40:08)

Yes, you do need to have PWS or IIS installed... if you' re on XP then you' ll want IIS because XP doesn' t support PWS.

I think you need XP Pro (Drifferent from XP) to run IIS... but I' m not positive about that.

If you have any trouble you might experament with Micorsofts Web Matrix

It' s a development tool for ASP.NET and it includes a small server app. that runs ASP.NET pages, so it should run classic ASP pages as well. (Amazing tool if you' re thinking of .NET - also includes a database)

Best of all it' s FREE!

And as far as I know it should run on XP Home edition just fine.

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/28/2002 12:04:11)

Bobby:
I downloaded the Web Matrix, also found something else that was interesting, lets see if I can get the link to work in here,
http://www.easyasp.org/downloads.html

I found this while searching for a site that had an asp tutorial that was really a good one, and now I can' t find it. I thought that I had bookmarked it. go figure. just went " poof" from my bookmarks.

Anyhow, I did a search on the computer and this is what I found, aspnet_regiis.exe, should I just hit run? I' m so nervous that I' m going to mess something up. I need to back things up here on the computer.

Oh well, that is my information for now. What I have come across, and wondering what I should do at this point. I started reading the acp3.0 by sams (lol, in 21 days) So I have taken that first step.

I just wish that I could find a book with a learning cd in it like the one that I had for front page. I find that I go t hrough those faster and learn more.

aspnet_regiis.exe

My guess is that this is the install file for the ASP.Net class registrations... When I downloaded the SDK and the Matrix I saved them to my desktop, then just clicked the icons to install... I didn' t really pay attention to the file names [&:]

You will need to have the .net framework installed, then install the Matrix. I think the server app only runs inside the Matrix environment, so you may have to open your pages through it...

I have yet to do much playing with it myself... trying to learn asp.net before I let the Matrix do it for me. [:D] As you' ve said in other posts " Lots of reading to do!"

[:D]

BTW - which version of XP are you running? If it' s XP Pro then IIS came with it [;)]

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/28/2002 20:21:06)

Bobby:
My version of xp is the home xp. Not professional. This came factory installed on my computer. Not an upgrade.

The file that I mentioned that I found-I found this before the matrix download. I have the matrix saved in my downloads folder for later installation.

As I was searching the computer here are some things that I found: Python.exe, Pythonw.exe, ODBCAD 32.exe, Install.exe-description, Microsoft.net framework set up boot strapper. Also under Microsoft.net I found 17 .exe files. I also have component Services which have compexp.msc, comrepl.exe, comrep.exe.

This is totally confusing to me. I have no clue what to do here. I' m totally clueless in NJ!!!!!!!!![:@][:@]

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/28/2002 20:22:27)

oops all most forgot to add this, some things that I have searched show Windows NJ and Windows 2000, I don' t know if that is of any help.

bobby -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 0:27:05)

I didn' t see anything in the Matrix info that said you had to have XP Pro... and it said this about the server:

quote:

Development Web Server. Develop and test your ASP.NET applications, without requiring IIS. Web Matrix includes a lightweight personal web server that serves most web content, including ASP.NET pages and XML Web Services, for local requests.

So it looks like it should be able to run on XP Home..?

I suppose it' s worth a try... you might try the forums at the ASP.NET SITE and see if anyone there has more experience than I do with it... that shouldn' t be too hard! [:)]

Doug G -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 1:46:50)

If you are going to continue working locally, I would seriously consider upgrading to XP Pro. The IIS 5.1 that' s included with XP Pro will teach you what you' ll run across at a windows ISP.

I use both IIS and the web matrix server for testing, so far I' ve only used the web matrix server for playing with some web matrix .net pages. I haven' t tried using the web matrix as a test server for general asp, and I' ve never tried connecting to it with Frontpage.

You can use Frontpage to connect to a local IIS in the same manner you connect to an ISP server.

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 7:26:29)

Doug:
I would love to upgrade to xp pro. In fact I wish that I had gotten this with the computer instead of the home xp.

Where would I find information / pricing on how to do this?

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 18:51:30)

bobby:
thanks for the link to the asp.net forum. I did find some answers in there. Even though I have these things in here, maybe they were corupted somehow? I tried to do the install on here with the .net but it wouldn' t work. So, I have to download this again with several other things, 2 of which I already downloaded, the matrix and the sdk. So tomorrow I' m going to install the .net download. I' d do it today, but this has been an exhuasting day searching through the comptuer to find out what was not working and why, not that I really knew what I was looking for [:D][:D].

Thanks again for your help, and btw, [:D][:D][:D], I adore your original muffins.[:D]

Doug G -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 18:52:22)

Take a look here

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/default.asp

I didn' t see a price specifically for XP Home to XP Pro.

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 18:55:32)

thanks Doug I' ll take a look at it now. I did look around the net a bit today, however I couldn' t seem to find any prices on upgrades, just on the purchases of professional xp.

appreciate the help big time![;)]

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/29/2002 19:01:24)

http://shop.microsoft.com/Referral/Productinfo.asp?siteID=10798
Doug:
I found the price!!! This way if anyone asks in the future [:D][:D] You can let them know!

It says that it is 199.00 Then there is one below it for I think 289.00 that has something to do with liscenses?

Anyhow, thanks again, I' d love to be able to afford this now, but unfortunately I can' t. It was like pulling teeth to get hubbie to purchase Front Page 2002 for me.[:D][:D] As well as the few books that he has purchased for me. So I don' t think this is an option to ask about right now.[:j]

Doug G -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 4:28:12)

I saw the general upgrade price of $199 too, but I was thinking there should be a better price upgrading from XP. I recall you can get an XP Home upgrade from W9x/ME for $100, and an XP Pro upgrade for $199, so I figure there should be an XP Home to XP Pro for $100.

In any case, tell your husband how it makes you snippy when you are spending so much time fighting with half-way tools. It in his best interest to have your projects go smoothly. :)

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 8:38:47)

Doug:
Actually I don' t get snippy.[:D][:D][:D] when projects don' t go smoothly, I get frustrated and search more. [:D][:D]

When I start earning some mula, I' ll just get it on my own. lol, I' ll appreciate it more that way.[:D][:D]

I also thought the upgrade was a bit on the expensive side. I figured that it couldn' t be too much. But I guess the more detailed of a program, the more money they want!!

Have a great one, and thanks for your help.

Doug G -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 15:09:44)

I knew that [:p]

I probably could have picked a better word to use [:D]

I was also a bit put off on the upgrade price. If you do serious development with asp and db' s it' s worth it though.

There is another free web server available at www.asp.net, I just was there this morning and it' s mentioned on their home page. I d/l' d it but haven' t tried it out yet. It requires the NET framework, which I don' t know if you can install on XP Home.

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 19:08:23)

Doug,
I went to asp.net, excellent source to go to if you are looking for a great asp forum. Actually Bobby referred me there.

I found out that on xp home, you can' t run an IIS, only on the xp professional. At least this is the information that I found.

Now i went to the site to download the matrix, and according to the site I have the .net framework on my computer, so I dowloaded the matrix, and saved it. According to my computer, I went into add remove programs and according to the .net framework thing mine is corrupted somehow. I don' t know how. Unless when i had to reformat recently something didn' t format correctly.

I don' t have a disc to do this with my computer this is all with in the computer somehow. You can however, purchase the disc, which I think that I might do in the future. Funny how these companies can nickle and dime you isn' t it? I' d prefer the disc.

I suppose I can look at application recovery and see if it is listed in there, but I don' t think that it was.

I know one thing, this is definately keeping me learning. Just when I think I have gotten it, along comes a box marked surprise!, and inside is another glitch that I have to work through.

Nothing like determination to keep a person going,[:D][:D][:D][:D].

[:D] I should have purchased the computer repair item that I saw on vacation, a clock with dynamite taped to it!![:D][:D][:D]

Thanks for your help, If I find out anything else I' ll let you know. I had planned on installing the downloads today, but school shopping had to be first on the list. Every now and then I have to leave computer land and visit the real world.[;)]

Spooky -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 20:28:54)

This may help run XP home?
I havent tried it myself, as Im happliy on 2k :-)

http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/tm.asp?m=44011&p=1&tmode=6

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 21:31:57)

spooky,
this coincides with the information that I have been finding on the pws. I found information on ms that stated that as of Jan 03 PWS will no longer be available.

I sort of figured that I' d need to upgrade to xp pro for the IIS. However, I should still be able to use the .net framework right?

Also, through front page 2002 isn' t IIS somehow available for use somehow?

I' m definatly in need of guidance![:D][:D][:D]

thanks for the link, going back to read more. appreciate the help!!

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 21:41:58)

Spooky,
here is an interesting link from the article that you sent me to.
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3c3c9b9d.518663173%40news
This talks about installing the IIS on a xp home comptuer.

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/30/2002 21:50:21)

Spooky,
Now this is really strange, I did a search on my computer and came up with two IIS.DL_, one is in C:\1386 and the other is in C:\Windows1386.

I also searched the IIS.IN_ and found them in the same place as the above mentioned.

Now I' m seriously confused. Also they are listed with the little icon that shows that Windows doesn' t recognize them.

I sure could use some help with this one.

Doug G -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/31/2002 18:25:31)

<$0.02>
I would not try to load PWS or IIS on XP home myself. The methods I' ve seen, like the link Spooky posted, are tinkering with things best left untinkered.

Copying OS dll' s is risky, without fully testing the changes who knows what unexpected surprises will show up. Plus it' s probably not legal.

c1sissy -> RE: asp books and IIS/PWS (8/31/2002 21:15:53)

Doug
thanks for the input of change![:D][:D] that appears to be the consences. i have thought about it, but won' t do it. Wont want to mess things up.

I have the matrix downloaded, went and downloaded the .net framework, however something still isn' t working when I try to open up the sample page.

Could be something with the programing of hp with the computer. I' m not going to worry about it though. I can do this through the matrix and through Front page 2002.

I have been at the asp.net site and also have a professor from somewhere emailing me.

He can' t understand why I don' t have the IIS on here either. Supposedly his class has computers that use this process on the xp home. but since I don' t have anyone close by to fix what I would mess up in this area, I don' t want to do this.

I' ll see what I find out about the .net and why it isn' t working, but for now Iknow that I can use the fp and matrix to run the pages. As well as doing my own coding.

I feel rich now from your input[:D][:D][:D][:D]
