Active X Control - 8/28/2002 12:52:42

I am just starting to understand what they are and what they can do. Could someone please direct me to a site that uses practical application of them. I really want to try and use them for something other than the WOW factor.

Thanks!
Rich

You might want to check out the article that Gil posted HERE

While there might be some good uses of Active X (like Flash movies, etc) a lot of folks are shying away from them for security reasons.

You might want to investigate some more " user friendly" ways to accomplish what you' re tying to do... :)

Personally, I have my firewall set to ask permission before running ANY Active X - if I don' t know or trust the site, I don' t allow them.

One example: I went to the Seattle Seahawks site, allowed their ActiveX and suddenly my " View Source" option was greyed out... not just on their site but all over the map.

I found out how to fix it, and just to test I went back to the ' Hawks site and it did it again. I won' t go back.

I don' t think they' re trying to do anything melicious, but I don' t like anyone using THAT kind of control over my machine without telling me about it.

Plus I think web code that is rendered by a browser should be open source... JMO [:p]

Thanks Bobby! I' ll look at the article.

I agree it should be open source. What I am looking at is a very complex form and ways to validate client side other than EMSCA script.

Ooofdah.

Have you looked into ASP.net?

There are some built in features in the .net framework that might help you accomplish what you' re looking for..? way over my head I' m afraid.

Yea, I haven' t even jumped into the NET framework. I' m sitting for my MCP in Interdev on Tuesday. If you know what I mean its like being in school. Its not if you can or can' t do it, but do you get the concept enough to pass a test.

Holy cow.

In some ways I' m jealous... because I' d like to know Interdev well enough to pass any test... but I also don' t have to sweat about taking a test... [:p]

Good luck!
