Search Engine Registration Help - 8/29/2002 13:40:20
Okay...need some input here. I know most of you are _against_ using search engine submission software... so I' ve decided to give up the " crutch" and migrate towards manual submission. Since one cannot feasibly submit to *every* engine/directory out there, my question is which ones do YOU personally use when submitting customer' s websites? [:p]

Stick with the big names: Google, Alta Vista, Ask Geves, Yahoo & MSN (if you' re willing to pay), etc.

There are half a million of them out there... but probably less than 20 of them make up 99% of online SE use. And many of them use the same engine to perform searches...

Start with ODP @ www.dmoz.org . This will help your Google ranking. Google is feeding a few for back fill. They also give a lot of nice traffic themselves.

Also I would find " nitch" engines/directories. If your site is based on a certain topic search out directories on that topic. While they may not be recommended by a lot of people it will give you targeted traffic.

Also search out other sites on topic with yours and exchange links, this will be another source of targeted traffic.

Be an authority on a subject. Build content page after content page. After a few months you will notice people entering your site on these pages.

Great article right here at Outfront. Towards the end of it there are links to the major search engines, including some of the free ones.

There are many search engines but few that really matter. Most of the hundreds or thousands that you see being offered by the multiple submission merchants are little more than scantily disguised methods of collecting email addresses.

This is what I do for most clients if it is any help. All the links below are to the relevant submission pages.

Free Submissions:

1. Google: Feeds Yahoo and AOL among others.
2. Open Directory: Very important, provides directory listings for Google and hundreds of other sites, often niche sites.
3. Relevent free niche directories and SEs - in my case this would most of the time include the main Irish SEs and Directories as well as those related to the topic of the site.

Paid Submissions

1. Inktomi: Feeds iWon, MSN and HotBot among others. First URL costs $39.00/year, each URL thereafter costs $25.00/year.

2. Yahoo: Kind of essential but expensive now - $299 submission, $299 annual fee thereafter.

3. Altavista: 1st URL - $39.00, URLs 2-10 - $29.00 each. Pricing is per 6 months using Express Submit

4. Lycos: Also feeds alltheweb.com. Costs $18 plus $12 per page submitted. This is an annual fee.

5. Teoma: Feeds Ask Jeeves and ask.com. First URL $30, subsequent URLs $18 each. Annual Fee.

So, if you submit to Yahoo and submit two pages to each of the others the initial cost is:

Yahoo: $299
Inktomi: $64
Altavista: $68 (6 months only)
Lycos: $42
Teoma: $48
Total: $521

This is in additional to the quoted hourly rate for carrying out the submissions.

Some of the ones included under the heading of paid submissions above have a free submission facility also but I find that submitting commercial sites to them using this is fultile.

Good information - Thank you all! As for the paid submissions, do you find that your clients are willing to pay these fees or do they expect this to be done for free? I have created about 30 sites for area businesses and am not sure how receptive my clientele would be if told they must pay on avg $500 for submission to some SE' s. Many of them are mom/pop businesses that don' t have large advertising budgets. These small businesses certainly deserve a chance at internet marketing just as the larger corporations do....but it just isn' t in their budget to pay the cost for submissions. How do you as web developers handle these situations?

There is not a lot you can do except tell them the facts and let them decide.

Some people go for the lot, some for none and some for a select few but they cannot expect you to do it for free - the charges are there and you have no control over them. You would probably be surprised at those who will go for it. These small businesses are often quite accustomed to paying for print advertising and other things like yellow pages listings and so on and by comparison these prices are not very high.

You will certainly be doing them no favors by submitting to all the thusands of useless search engines just to be able to say they are in loads of them. They will get little benefit from them and lots of spam. There are very few worthwhile free places to submit other than those mentioned above.

It is however very worthwhile trying to get them into niche directories, local directories and such like and to explore the possibility of links to them from other sites. However there is a cost for this too - it is REALLY time consuming and that time should be chargable time.

The least you could do is list/link them on your portfolio/links page so they get picked up automatically over time by the spiders sweeping the web for free. Especially google.

Thank you Garry. Many are already listed, but I never even thought about the spiders picking them up from our page! :)

--jackie,

The crawlers even pick up text in PDF documents. Try a search on Google for " anthem compendium" (with the quotes). There should be five responses from three sites. Only two have ever been submitted to the search engines. Both were free submissions at that time.
