extension hassles - 9/6/2002 9:25:15
I have a site (http://www.langstonesc.org.uk) that is hosted by Newnet (UK) on an Apache Unix Server. The FP extensions were set up when the site was first transferred to Newnet (March this year) and have up till now presented no problems, other than that Newnet stick a little stats file in the main web directory which has its access set such that I have to do a full publish every time. Suddenly last week, I started getting an error when publishing saying that the FP extensions were not present. I haven' t changed anything on my PC that should have affected FP. Nothing the host did made any difference. They first re-set the extensions, then deleted all the files and got me to try re-publishing, then finally completely removed and set the site up from scratch on a new area on their server. I was tearing my hair out. I had no site and no way of re-publishing. Then I tried to solve the problem my end by creating a new web and copying in all the files via Explorer. I got a slightly DIFFERENT error, but still saying host extensions were at fault and still couldn' t publish. Finally I agreed with the host tech. support (who had been very patient and helpful) that as I wasn' t using any features that required extensions, I might as well use FTP, and in a few minutes my site was back online. The extraordinary thing is that I manage several sites hosted with Newnet. Just to check that my copy of FP was not corrupted, I did a minor invisible change to another site and re-published without any problems whatever. Newnet said that this other site was on a different server (still Unix) but unfortunately they couldn' t move the problem site to that one because it was full. We did examine the possibility of re-locating the site to one of their NT servers, but decided on the no extensions path. I have to say that I don' t blame Newnet for this. They are excellent for service and value and were most polite and helpful, They did make the comment that FP can do strange things without any warning and apparently for no reason. They were foxed by this error, and so am I! At the moment, I am completely put off using FP extensions ever again as you can do everything that they do in other ways. I have Dreamweaver as well, but prefer the FP user interface, even if I don' t use the component features and publish via FTP. Should I ask for any future sites to be hosted on an NT server in preference to Unix if I have the choice? Jenny Fletcher

There are benefits to an MS server over a NON MS and there are benefits to having a NON MS server over a MS server...so tha tall depends on what you want to acheive. The problem you were having may have been caused by a timeout in one of your publish sessions...however after you wiped the files from the server and then had the FPSE reinstalled...when you published again did you get the " FrontPage cannot find a web at http://yoursite.com. Do you want FP to create one for you?
